High Expectations for Panthers
By David Robinett | [email protected], Brianne Welch | [email protected]

"The Gorman Panthers are just a few weeks from starting their second season in 6-man football.

Head coach Brent Williamson's team went undefeated in 2015 while playing an outlaw schedule. This year, the Panthers are in a district, and they can go to the playoffs.

The playoffs are definitely on their minds, too. Gorman is picked to win the district, and a target is painted squarely on their backs.

"Every year is different, you know we have quite a few kids returning from last year," Williamson said. "We've actually got 29 boys out this year. You know, expectations are always high. I think we're picked first in our district. We've got something to play for this year, so we better be ready."

"It's a good feeling," Panther Ismael Herrera said. "I mean even though we're picked we're still working for it, and we're working to get deep."

Danny Limon said, "Our expectations are very high. Our community has us up here, and the thing for us is coming up here we got to work for that. We're not taking any team for granted. We're playing game by game, pushing ourselves. It's just a matter of doing it or not, having heart."

Four starters are back on both sides of the ball for the Panthers, and Ismael Herrera is one of those returners. He rushed for almost 1,300 yards in 2015."

Big Country Player of the Week:
By Evan Ren of the Abilene Reporter News

6. Trent Padron and Ismael Herrera, QB/RB, Jr./Sr., Gorman — "This 1-2 punch was at the forefront of the Panthers' 96-48 win over Throckmorton last week, with Padron hitting 11 of 13 passes for 259 yards and six touchdowns. Defensively, he charted 19 tackles, forced a fumble and picked off a pass that he returned 80 yards for a score.

Herrera was no less dangerous, hauling in six Herrera deliveries for 162 yards and four TDs. He also rushed 11 times for 140 yards, finding the end zone an additional three times."

The real test will be the last 4 games of the year

Nope. They will 45 them all. May May and Gordon prove me wrong. At least 2-3 of those games could be 80-0 or 80-8/6 at the half if they play the starters the full half, which they should to prepare them for the playoff's.

Gordon, and May know how to play football so I wouldn't count them out just yet. Didn't Gorman give up 48 to Throckmorton? Why didn't they beat them 80-8/6?

I wish them well and welcome to the sixman UIL from a fan of the game (not a Coach, former player of it or expert like the Guru).
But someone should let Garrett Bell know they didn't move down. They moved up. Players, Coaches or Fans would not be having this much Fun in eleven man.
They remind me of Throckmorton's move up. It's almost like De Ja Vu al over again.
Nice (and sensible) touch hiring a sixman Coach for the change over.
Seems I remember reading of a couple of schools over the years that tried this with their 11 man Coach who didn't fare so well though I can't name them at the moment, and probably would not if I could. It wasn't their fault, the game is a little different, the speed shocks some.

Marfa's 11man coach stayed there through the transition....he is still coaching 6man

Fifty one, if my memory serves me correctly, Vance Jones and Jerry Burkhart both came from the eleven man ranks. And, from the looks of things, they aren't too shabby.
I heard one of the great six-man coaches a few years ago say that a good coach could coach any sport and be successful at it. And he was correct.

Just curious how the boy from Gorman is today? Someone told me they had to air lift a player last night due to head injuries. My thoughts and prayers are with him for a speedy recovery.
