The best Strawn Gordon game ever? The best I've ever seen? I'm going to have to check scores to jog my memory. This from a Greyhound perspective of course. Hat's off to the Horns, they held Strawn to way below their average on points, a scary 8 only with 22 themselves into the 3rd quarter. On the edge of breaking it open. So many big plays for so few points. A Strawn fumbled pitch 70 yards for a Gordon TD, an outstanding one handed interception by the Horns in the first half.
I think a fourth down conversion and a fourth down stop by the Hounds in the third may have been the difference in the game.
I've not jumped out of my seat and yelled so much in the 4th quarter in years. I was not alone.
Multiple 4th down conversions. Tying the score at 22 with 5 minutes left. Could they stop them and get the ball back or at least stop them and send it into overtime? Somewhere in there an interception, a 4th down stop, a 4th down conversion, a 4th down TD. The Horns driving in the last minute, an interception on the last play to end it. The sideline erupted onto the field to become a jumping mass of players, coaches, trainers, managers and others. Quickly reformed by Coach Lee to properly greet the Longhorns.
Congratulations to both teams. Thank you for giving your all.

No doubt this Gordon v Strawn game was somewhere in the top 10 of best ever in this series. Hats off to both teams for a very entertaining, old-fashioned slobber-knocker.

S'ville Faith undedog to Gorman by 40 and just totally rolled by 40..... This wasn't a Toy failure, something else happened. What???

One key play for Strawn no one will talk about is Coach Lee's decision on kick a kick off deep and play the field position game in the 4th quarter, which he NEVER does, it worked for him, Strawn contained the KO and held Gordon to a turnover on downs in that possession.

Man that was a good game! Clean all the way around, Gordon's defense was solid the whole game, and Strawn's defense in the 2nd half was great.

Another key play in the S-G game to me was a non call on a penalty in the 4th. I was groaning and saying crap over a tackle on the Srawn sideline by them that seemed pretty obviously a horse collar to me. A flag was thrown but then they waved it off. I was thankful but never understood why it was waved off.

Another 45ing by High Island, another by Union Hill. Set's up the probable long distance district championship this week.
Cinderella lost a slipper. Penelope lost by 4 after starting so hot. Confidence shaken? Still potential after what they've done thus far.
Abbott won by 8 in a rivalry game. Enthralling for them I imagine. Not exactly dominance.
Gorman's wheels fell off? Still a lot of potential. Can they get them back on for district.
what's happening in the West?

Looking backwards not many better Strawn Gordon games for Strawn in the last 20 years. In 14 Gordon won 60-50. 12 was Gordon 36-34 (wasn't this the rain game with the punt snap rolling around in the end zone on the last play?). 11, Gordon 57-50. Strawn 75-8 in 09 probably motivated Gordon for several years. 08, SHS lost to GHS in district after eventual all state mvp Johnny Abbott was injured. Redemption was sweet for Strawn in the quarterfinals on the way to State.
Gordon 64-50 in 07, they were behind by 20 in the 3rd., propelled to district champs for first time since 03.
03, Gordon won 47-34, new Coach Lee told his team if we can just get out of district, anything is possible.
98, a game I didn't see. Strawn won 20-14 on the way to 13-0 before meeting Trinidad in the semi final. Trinidad ended up 14-0. SB was now Union Hill Coach Mallory. Of course Gordon came back and won State for the second time in 99.

The line judge on the sideline where the play occurred and saw the hand inside the back of the shoulder pads. The back judge saw the defenders other arm around the ball carriers waist and over ruled the line judge. It probably should have been called as a horse collar because the ball carriers shoulders came backwards. The call didn't hurt G but getting the call would have been a big boost at that point in the game. The bigger penalties were the 3rd and 4th Q holding calls when G was in great scoring position and the penalties killed the momentum of the drives.
Speaking of drives, quite unusual for a game to have as many time-consuming drives as this one. In the 3rd Q, each team got one possession (S's second possession in the 3rd started with just a few seconds left.) I thought both defenses played lights out football. G's young secondary gave up two big pass plays and S did not, that was the difference in the game. Outstanding catch by a S receiver to keep the game winning drive alive on a big 4th and long.
I have the best "seat" in the house for Gordon home games. This game was as good as I've seen since Strawn in 2014!
