Trick play I observed as a spectator

I was watching a 6 man game in person 2 years ago - in Houston area, it was 4th and short and the QB was under center.

The conversion was successful for a few yards. 3 or 4 if I recall.

I think I observed the QB take the snap under center and then give it back to the center surreptitiously. Fumblerooski like.
I recall I think it was a tight formation.
If illegal, then something special occurred that I didn't see and wasn't expecting. Is it that simple? QB sneak converted to center sneak for 6 man?

Anyone "know" this play and what it is exactly, I didn't have film of it and if you do, I would love to see it.

Thanks for reading and any productive responses.

The rule changed about 10 years ago. Before you could hand the ball right back to the center between his legs. This caused confusion as to whether or not the QB got possession of the ball before the center took it back. Now you have to use a wrap-around hand off. The QB raises up with the ball and places it in the centers stomach. Will work against a short yardage 4-2 defense at least once a game. Cannot be called ahead of time, usually the QB looks the defense over to see if the play will work and then taps the center to let him know the ball is coming his way.

I can understand why the rule would change. It usually wasn’t much of a handoff if I remember correctly.
