Topic Everyone (Mainly Parents & School Boards) Should Read

Sounds like Midland now has the Big Spring disease.

Play my kid and don't work him too hard. His/her talent is supreme and needs no heavy coaching. He/she's gonna be the starting QB/point guard/pitcher or I'll use my influence to get your butt fired.

Came across this article today...I think everyone on this messageboard and every school board member and parent of a student athlete should read this. I am sure it speaks to some schools in the six-man world...

Wow...deja vu.
And,
I've only been a professional teacher/coach for 4 years
and this has happened at every school so far.
How can "they" not see that it hurts the kids
as much as it hurts the coach
and his family
who finds themselves fired for no good reason
and moving again.

I'm so glad someone's writing about this problem.
Here's the killer quote: "...trying to find the right fit for programs when it comes to coaches."
This is the biggest line of bulls..t ever spoken by anyone involved in HIGH SCHOOL athletics.
(Prolly why the divorce rate is so high too!)
There's no such thing as the right fit any more than the right wife.
It'll work if you make it work.
Period.
People are all flawed in some way and have different yet successful ways of doing things.
Any knowledgeable coach will do fine in any interscholastic position
given enough time, chance, and support.

I can personally say that there is such a thing as the right fit for me & my family. Some places better than others. No one really knows a situation until they are in that community/school system.

I guess what I was trying to say
is that most any position could potentially be the right fit.
If people would just love each other,
and keep things in perspective.
Every school is still just a school,
and they have similar characteristics/potential.
Obviously if the school hates you
you will be miserable.
But that doesn't neccessarily mean that YOU
were the problem/fit.
The school has the biggest responsibility to be a place where people fit into.

That makes sense. I've been at places that I felt like were a better "fit" as a whole than others - many things come into play, community standards, compensation, expectations, etc. Fortunately I've found my "fit" - taking nothing away from other places I've been. The good Lord puts us where he wants us, when he wants us there - in my 2 cent opinion.

Absolutely, but imagine the can of worms if he wins. Every parent living vicariously through their kids will be suing every school for not having junior as the team star.

That will kill high school sports and ALL extracurricular activities deader than a door nail.

Wow. My HS coach told me as a freshman that he wouldn't run me on relays over a senior, even though I was faster. I was told if I wanted to go to state, I had to do it as a 2 miler. I can't believe I missed out on winning a $40 million lawsuit. I may sue my grandparents for not filing suit on my behalf.

If the dad wins we, as coaches, are done for. Just like the coach from Midland said, parents are no longer preparing the kid for the path, instead they are preparing the path for the kid.

He will not win. I see this as a great opportunity for the court to set precedent that there is no right to play sports and certainly no duty on behalf of schools to provide opportunities into the future. I must admit I'd like to see the plaintiffs forced to produce an expert that could testify how a freshman who may have been faster than a senior lost out on $40 million. I think many six-man football coaches make more than professional hurdlers.

I can only hope
a bunch of the movers and shakers
of 6man schools
(Supe's and Prince's)
are keying into this trend
and have plans to stop the spiraling madness
before it all hits the fan.
How much longer can you keep this up?
When will you decide to go from good to great?
