This is not going to be a full-on ramblings but I wanted to hit a few games and thoughts as we head into the start of district play.
First off, the message boards have gotten a little heated over the past two weeks. The anti-Richland Springs and anti-Crowell folks seem to be out in full force. Of course when you start kicking the hornet's nest, you better be ready to get stung and the RS faithful have gone on the offensive.
Let's try to keep a few things in mind as we head forward... no derogatory comments naming players and coaches, please. There's no need for calling out the coaches who put the hard work into the game we all love and there's certainly no reason to call out individual kids by name. There's nothing wrong with disagreeing, but calling specific people out under the guise of anonymous username is not tolerated... and we veered away from this principle in the recent weeks. That, and their moms get mad.
OK, on to this week's games:
The first two are two of the biggest rivalries in six-man, Aquilla-Abbott and Strawn-Gordon. These games are huge. Although there are district implications for Abbott-Aquilla, they are both really about bragging right... and I expect both to be great games.
Abbott-Aquilla
Aquilla is favored by the computer, barely. It should be close. Real close. If you asked me preseason, I would have gone with Abbott. Nothing has changed my mind. Personally, I like Abbott's development. They are getting better each week and I think they will win a squeaker.
Gordon-Strawn
I think this was the first six-man game I took my wife to (girlfriend back then). It was at Gordon, like this year, and kind of freaked her out. The intensity of the rivalry was huge. Strawn is a slight favorite by six-man terms. I wouldn't be surprised by anything in this rivalry, especially with the game at Gordon. I don't have a real good feel on this, so I will stick with the computer.
Waco Live Oak-Austin Veritas
Last but not least, the biggest game in the private school ranks, Waco Live Oak at Austin Veritas. Both teams have close losses to good teams. I know that Veritas is favored by 12, but for some reason I feel that Live Oak is heading into the week on a high. They played Calvert close two weeks ago then topped Blum last week. I think they pull off the upset.
That's all for now. The second season is beginning. Time to get it done.
