AVALON — In just their second year of existence, the SMACC Panthers (12-0) have punched their ticket to the TCAL Division II state title game.

By virtue of their 51-26 triumph over the Marshall Christian Academy Guardians last weekend, the Panthers set up a date Saturday in Hutto against defending champion Corpus Christi Annapolis — a team that SMACC defeated 42-8 back on Oct. 29.

“We are excited about the state championship,” head coach Bruce Hall said via e-mail. “(Our) offensive line blew holes in the Guardians’ defense, which allowed our two 1,000-yard rushers to combine for over 300 yards rushing for the game. The coaching staff is proud of the character of the Panthers since the Guardians were ahead at the end of the first quarter.”

True, Marshall was able to build a slight 14-12 edge after the first 10 minutes of play, but it was the Panthers who struck first in the contest.

SMACC’s Taylor Robertson came up with the initial big play of the game, intercepting a pass on the Guardians’ second offensive snap to set up his own short touchdown run a few plays later. The PAT attempt was no good, leaving the Panthers up 6-0.

On SMACC’s third possession, Matt Chapman increased the Panther lead by ripping off a 56-yard score, with Chapman and Adam Bryant fueling the team’s ground game all afternoon long. Again, though, the conversion was missed, giving SMACC a 12-0 edge.

Marshall responded by adding an immediate touchdown and a successful two-point kick, later vaulting ahead on another score that was set up by a questionable call.

t was the last time that SMACC trailed in the contest, as Chapman opened the second quarter scoring with a six-yard touchdown that tallied the first of 32 consecutive points recorded by the Panthers.

Bryant set up the next score by causing a fumble, with Andrew Hall covering the ball to set up SMACC just 39 yards away from the goal line. Chapman capped the drive with a 13-yard touchdown jaunt, followed by another failed PAT attempt.

Hall forced another turnover just moments later, stripping the ball away from the Guardians. The Panthers turned the takeaway into points, with Chapman scoring from three yards out to cap a 61-yard drive that gave SMACC a commanding 31-14 lead at halftime.

The Panther defense continued to wreak havoc in the third quarter, as Brandon Newman recovered his own forced fumble at the Marshall four-yard line. Robertson had no trouble cashing in, scoring on his next rush attempt.

SMACC later added a 15-yard touchdown run from Chapman in the third period, scoring one final touchdown in the fourth on a 20-yard pass from Hall to Robertson. The ensuing one-point conversion was run in by Zak Johnson.

Chapman led his team with 237 yards and three scores on the ground, while Bryant added 104 yards and one touchdown on 18 attempts. Robertson totaled 29 yards and two scores on just three rushing attempts in the contest.

Defensively, the Panthers were tackling machines against the Guardians, with Robertson and Newman each recording 16 total tackles in the lopsided win. Hall made 15 total tackles, followed by 11 from Bryant, nine from Chapman, six from Hugh McCallick and four from Jacob Neffendorf.

Newman and Bryant each registered sacks in the contest, with Hall forcing two fumbles and recovering two as well. In all, SMACC had six takeaways in the game.

The Panthers will look to hoist the state championship trophy Saturday at noon at Hutto High School, facing off against the Warriors for the second time this season. Corpus Christi Annapolis (9-2) advanced to the title game after posting a 68-56 win over Bastrop Tribe Consolidated.
