State Title games moving to Bastrop Memorial

Hello, this is your friendly neighborhood Six Man Title game announcer. The championship games are moving from Zephyr to Bastrop Memorial stadium and will be held on December 3rd starting at 11 AM. The 11 man title games will be held there as well. I know the folks at TAPPS wanted to continue at Zephyr but it fell through. Not sure of the exact reason but it could be a variety of things. Zephyr may have wanted to hold the stadium for potential UIL games as it's a popular facility in the 6 man scene and that is a big playoff weekend. May have been a Thursday issue as well. Remember that if Emery/Weiner makes it they will require a religious accommodation. That would have put more of a strain on Zephyr who also has a big basketball tourney that weekend as well.

Bastrop does have a very nice facility though, and you're very close to some great BBQ. If you have the chance you need to try Franklin's. It's worth the 2-3 hours in line.

Not at this time. They're listing the 1st time as 11 AM. Could be 11, 3, and 7. Could be they do two on Thursday and one early Friday before 11 man games start that evening.

They do it in the UIL and if everything's at one site, it can't be avoided. Heck that 1st day they play title games starting at 10 AM on a Thursday. Plus with the possible religious accommodation issue it's almost unavoidable. As small of a district as Zephyr is there's probably no way they could host during a Friday afternoon. They just don't have the personnel and the volunteer types are likely working too. You're going to find that at most smaller districts as well. Bastrop on the other hand has a bunch of personnel to whom they can just say, "Hey Bob, we need you at the stadium on Thursday to work some 6 man games." and bam, you've got workers.

Would I prefer Friday? Sure, but in the end the kids are going to be more interested in playing for a title than where it is.

I don't know that Emery had anything to do with the decision. According to their schedule, only three of their games were played this year outside of the few minutes before sundown Friday evening to the appearance of the three stars Saturday evening. They play this Saturday at 2:00pm...

That really stinks!!!!! Teams that win the semis have THREE DAYS to prepare for the biggest game of the year- two really. Monday and Tuesday teach the scout plan, walk through on Wednesday or possible travel, then BAM, game time!! Here's to hoping there are no injuries.

Not real fair to the kids as well as the coaches who put in all the hard work all year long. Two or three days for the biggest game of their high school career just don't seem right. Someone should have put more thought into making that decision.
