I've listened to two, both good.

I do firmly disagree with a comment made in the Josh Johnson interview, where you say you were given the advice take what you know about about football (coming from 11man) and throw it out the window, and Im sure a great many other coaches would also disagree with that, as you still have to teach and focus on the basics which are the same in 6man and 11man... blocking and tackling.

That's my complaint...now the praise.

In the same interview some great points were made about tackling in the open field and other points along the lines of how 6man football is great in developing players for college.

I really enjoyed the Coach Johnson interview, very well done. I love the entire premise, and I hope you do many, many more, anything that promotes our game, I am all for. I do however agree 1000% with Leman, you don't by any means throw everything out the window, not even close, not when it comes to fundamentals.

Like Leman said, blocking and tackling, but also running routes, ball carrying, QB foot work, all are the same, and much, much more! So in 6-man should I teach my running back to hold the ball differently then 11-Man, no I wouldn't. It's something I'm dealing with at my current school as we are going from 11-Man to 6-Man, and I'm trying get rid of the stigma of how 6-Man is so different, when it is not.

I've even had to explain to some parents that 6-Man is not flag football. I think as 6-man coaches we should all be on a united front on this issue. But like I said, enjoyed the interview none the less. Keep up the great work.

I cannot speak for Coach Goleman, however it is all about perspective and here are my two cents for what it is worth. After my experience playing collegiate and arena football I did have to change a little thinking once I started coaching. Even going from college football to arena the indoor game was so much faster. Football is still football it is blocking, tackling, etc. in 2007 my first (ROOKIE COACH) job as DC I remember a coach returning on our staff telling me ( boy I knew it all. I didn’t know ANYTHING like I thought I did) this 5’5 145 lb kid with be your starting NG/ Rusher. I responded to that no way he will play DB for me coach. Sorry brother !! Again little did I know. Well he was all-state on that side of the ball as a DL, and played in 2 state games in that position his JR and SR years.

Also,

One of my best defensive guys if he played 11 man would be a RG but he played DB (corner we ran Cover 2 to his side to keep him in the flats)versus spread for us as he was the slowest guy on our defense running a 5.2 in the 40.

But football is football. Terms and such. Sticking, stemming routes, QB’s lawn, 3 way go, pre-snap reads, getting the leverage back , kick step, snake step, GT Counter, 1 step cut, Bama cuts, free step, false step, outside/inside head up, stalk blocking, zones steps, blocking down.

I am sure we can share several stories where 11man only coaches struggle coming in from 3A and up programs thet coach 6man, especially if it is their first time coaching the 6man game. It is a mindset shift. One of my (teammates)QBs in college has coached 11man for years and he just Finished his 1st year in 6man. He is talking to me about the game a lot and is trying to figure out that defensive side of the ball. I said be happy giving up 30 ppg game on that side of the ball. He is like no Johnson, but he has that mindset from 11man as the guy giving up 30 in 11man you will look for a job in the spring.

I agree with you both about throwing it all out the window. Again, I cannot speak for Coach G but I am not sure he meant it that way fully.

Blessings,

Coach Johnson

am not sure he meant it that way fully.

Could be very true, he might have been more flippant than anything there, but even if so it is a statement that helps perpetuate a myth, IMO, that it isnt real football held by many outside the game.

With that said...Great interview by the way coach JJ and coach G!

And yes it is a different style in many regards I would say that in so much as conditioning as a team and many things yall later got into as the interview went on...which in reality contradicted the "best advice" of "throw everything you know out the window"
