Bracken rolls past Falcons

GERONIMO — On paper, Friday’s matchup between the Lifegate Christian School Falcons and the Bulverde Bracken Christian School Warriors shouldn’t have been much of a game.

The Falcons were coming off their second 10-win season, ranked third among TAPPS Division II six-man football schools, and a 32-point favorite against a team that finished 1-9 in its first season of play in 2006.

But, the game is played on the field, not on paper. At the least, the Warriors seemed not to get the memo and left Erwin-Lee Stadium on the winning end of a 54-20 game.

Bracken jumped out early, taking the opening kickoff and going 38 yards in five plays, with Jake McCrum scoring from six yards out to take an 8-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.

Bracken added two more first-quarter scores — a 3-yard scoring pass from Marty Cruz to Tye Sanders and an 11-yard run by Matt Stepter to take a 22-0 lead at the end of the quarter.

Lifegate got on the board early in the second quarter, going 55 yards in five plays with Jeremy Meador running the ball in from six yards out for the first Falcon score of the season, cutting the Warrior lead to 22-6.

The Falcons defense couldn’t hold the Warriors in the remainder of the quarter as they gave up two more touchdowns to head to intermission down 38-6.

Lifegate held its own in the second half, with Cruz Sepeda cutting across the field on a 38-yard run to cut the lead to 38-12. The Falcons were threatening again early in the fourth quarter before Marty Cruz picked off Sepeda’s pass in the end zone and returned it 85 yards for a score and a 54-12 lead.

Sepeda brought the Falcons back, hitting Heath Jones for a 43-yard scoring play with less than minutes to play to bring the scoring to an end for the evening.
