Okay, folks ... best game of round two has to be

Brenham Christian (11-0)
at
Seguin Lifegate Christian (11-0)

Saturday, November 21 @ 2 pm

First, to answer questions. Why home at Lifegate? The two coaches agreed to flip for home field, thinking that alternate sites were basically close to either school or a true "neutral site" at an 11-man field would be cost prohibitive. The agreement was that the winner of the toss (held at the conclusion of the Brenham/Longview game) would host the game and the loser of the toss would arrange for officials from their chapter to come to the other site to call the game.

One of our middle school coaches was at Brenham and represented us for the toss. As Lifegate was scoring the touchdown that would end the game, my cell phone rings and it's Coach Tarbutton from Brenham telling me that the next game was at Lifegate.

So, it's time to pick'em ...

WOW, Interesting decision by Brenham Head Coach.
Guess he wasn't around when Lake Jackson Brazosport / Dickinson Pine Drive did that back in 2007.
Lake Jackson was a heavy favorite, The big boys in that district and they did a home field flip and Dickinson Pine Drive beat them 7-6.

VERY INTERESTING DECISION.. Could cost Brenham

No doubt this will be game of the week... i'm expecting a big crowd... Both of these teams are younger and feel like they've waited long enough watching other teams take it all.... NOBODY has stopped lifegate's offense this year.... they use the clock up to get us to score less but at any point in time we have five athletes that can take it 80 yds for the score.... Brenham is the same way.... not really a weak player on this team (on either side of the ball)... they hit hard, play hard, and win as a result..... whoever wants it more is going to win this game.... period

COME SEE US DOWN IN SEGUIN!!!! Friday night is classic car night at kirbys (burger joint).... good food too...

Okay, I gotta come clean. The reason Brenham is playing at Lifegate is blackmail, pure and simple. I had pictures of Coach Tarbutton in a compromising position ...

Buying a ticket to a crowded field football game.

Once he heard about that, he quickly agreed to our terms.

Speaking of irony of ironies, there is a possibility of TWO Seguin vs Brenham matchups Saturday afternoon.

First, at 2 pm ... Lifegate and Brenham Christian to move on in the TAPPS D2 6 man playoffs ...

Then, possibly, a 3 pm match at Texas State between Seguin HS and Brenham HS for the UIL 4A Volleyball State Championship. Those two teams would have to win their semi-final matches on Thursday.

There is one more thing we COULD throw in as a factor, but it hasn't seemed to hurt Brenham much.... They lost one of their defensive leaders for the season a few weeks ago.... ( He might be back idk) apparently he shattered his wrist and one of the bones in his forearm... they lost him at the beginning of the Austin Hill Country game..... they won by about thirty points... lol anyway whether he is going to be able to play or not, Brenham v Lifegate will be a great game....

Eagles advance to second round of TAPPS playoffs

From Staff Reports

Ian Roskow and Reagan Cameron each ran for a pair of touchdowns Saturday as the Brenham Christian Academy Eagles crushed Longview Trinity in a first-round TAPPS six-man playoff game at Hohlt Park, 64-7.

The game ended at halftime due to the 45-point mercy rule.

It was BCA’s first game since Oct. 23 after a forfeit victory followed by a bye week.

“I wish we would have had a little stiffer competition, to be honest, but after two or three weeks it felt good to hit somebody,” BCA (10-0) coach Matt Tarbutton said.

Roskow ran for 115 yards and two scores on six carries, while Cameron added 80 yards and two TDs on three touches. Lonnie Armstrong scored on a 6-yard carry and Kyle Armstrong added a rushing score as the Eagles finished with 241 rushing yards.

“They were not very aggressive on defense, so we only had a make a couple blocks and a couple cuts,” Tarbutton said.

Roskow scored on a 41-yard carry on the Eagles’ first play from scrimmage.

Alex Pryor caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Cameron on a halfback pass for BCA’s only completion of the game. Cameron also returned a punt 65 yards for BCA’s first punt return touchdown of the season.

Azamat Pate converted 6 of 9 extra points.

Armstrong led the Eagle defense with 10 tackles, including five for a loss.

“It was a good game defensively,” Tarbutton said. “Offensively, we did well too, but we had a good game plan lined up to really put pressure on them and it worked exceptionally well. Better than I thought it would, actually.”

Travis Cole made seven tackles, Lonnie Armstrong made six and Roskow and Dylan Cole each made three. Kyle Armstrong forced two fumbles, Lonnie Armstrong and Dylan Cole each recovered fumbles, and Roskow scooped up a fumble recovery and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown.

The Eagles advance to the TAPPS state quarterfinals, where they will face another undefeated team in Seguin Lifegate. Lifegate (11-0) will host BCA at 2 p.m. Saturday after winning the coin flip. Lifegate beat Brownwood Victory Life 53-8 in its first-round playoff victory.

“They’ve definitely showed they’re one of the top teams in the state,” Tarbutton said. “We’re definitely looking forward to the challenge. It’s going to be difficult, especially going there, but I think if we play our game, play our brand of physical football, we should come out on top.”

Lifegate faces No. 1 Brenham Christian

By Tucker Stephenson

SEGUIN — If Saturday’s second-round playoff game between Lifegate and Brenham Christian was a prizefight, it would be well worth the 50 bucks on pay-per-view.

Just look at the tale of the tape. Each team comes into the contest with a perfect 11-0 record, fresh off of a mercy-rule win in the first round. The Falcons belted Brownwood Victory Life 53-8, while the Eagles walloped Longview’s Trinity School of Texas 64-7.

And those convincing wins helped set up arguably the best matchup of the season in TAPPS Six-Man Division II.

“There won’t be any 45-point (mercy rule) going on,” said Lifegate head coach John Rabon. “It might be one of those games where the last one that has the football wins.”

In that case, the Falcons might want to plan on having the final possession. Brenham Christian has outscored its opponents 640-183 this year, averaging 58 points per contest — and that includes a 2-0 forfeit win over Faith Academy.

“They score points,” Rabon said. “They’ve got a real good spread back and a couple of good running backs that block well. They’re just a good football team.”

The Eagles have talent all over the field, with leading rusher Ian Roskow having totaled 1,016 yards and 20 touchdowns this year. Behind Roskow are Reagan Cameron and Lonnie Armstrong, who have combined to add another 1,009 yards and 22 scores on the ground.

Through the air, Brenham Christian’s leading passer is Travis Cole, who is 26-67 for 461 yards and 12 touchdowns, tossing just one interception. Roy Dawson has also proved to be a passing threat, completing 21 of his 41 attempts for 343 yards and seven more scores. Dawson also had just one pick on the year.

Rabon said that they key to competing against such an explosive group is to change up some looks and try to make the Eagles grind out long drives.

“We watched a few of their games on video and we’re going to try and scheme them a little bit,” Rabon said. “We’ve got some adjustments that we don’t usually do on defense. I don’t know if we can stop them, but our main goal is just to slow them down a bit.”

If the Falcons play as well defensively as they’re capable of, then the Eagles might find themselves in their toughest fight of the year. Against Victory Life, Lifegate forced five turnovers — three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

And it wasn’t just Caleb Tate and Matt Akin that did the damage. Freshman Tyler Swisher continued his breakout year with a pick six and a fumble recovery, giving Lifegate a legitimate trio of defensive playmakers.

But even when Brenham Christian does score, the Falcons can’t take a play of on special teams, as the Eagles also have a very good kicker in Azamat Pate. The junior has converted 94 two-point PATs this season.

Brenham Christian has made some big plays defensively as well, with 14 interceptions being made by just two players — Cole (8) and Dawson (6).

Lifegate must be able to control the ball and hold serve with key touchdowns, with Rabon saying that his offense will attempt to shorten the game.

“We’re going to keep the ball away from them as much as we can,” he said. “If we can do that and then continue to score whenever we have the ball, we’ll be in pretty good shape.”

If all things appear even, then perhaps the Falcons’ home field advantage will give them a needed edge. Rabon said that is may or may not play a role in the game’s outcome, but regardless, he’s happy that his team won the coin flip.

“Any time you can play at home, it’s a good thing,” he said. “They have to travel a little bit and we’ll get up Saturday morning having slept in our own beds a little longer.

“I don’t think it’s a huge factor, but it is a factor.”

Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Lifegate Christian School.

The Lifegate - Brenham game was a blast!!! Both teams played their hearts out. What great guys both teams have. Both teams stayed in the game till the bitter end. It truly was the game of the week and I'm glad I was there to see it. The teams matched up well. The only sad part is that they both can't continue on. The players and coaches are to be commended for what they have achieved and for the level of play and good sportmanship that was displayed. The parents and staff at Lifegate were gracious hosts for this event!

Great game, tough loss ... Lifegate couldn't convert or make the stops needed in the 4th qtr.

Interesting stat ... Lifegate led for over 24 minutes in the game (24:19), Brenham for 13:53 (including the last 10:02); it was 0-0 for the first 1:48. But the rule is the guy who leads at the end wins ...

Lifegate falls just short in 58-41 loss to BC

By Tucker Stephenson

SEGUIN — On Saturday, the Lifegate Falcons (11-1) proved once and for all that they belong with the big boys, pushing No. 1 Brenham Christian (12-0) for much of the afternoon before finally succumbing 58-41.

If not for a few slippery pigskins, the outcome may have turned out differently, as three Lifegate fumbles negated a chance to recapture the lead in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles capitalized on those miscues to escape Seguin with a muddy, hard-fought victory, while head coach John Rabon’s team may have earned a little respect from other six-man enthusiasts around the state.

“I’m so proud of our guys,” Rabon said. “We’ve been kind of looked down on and bad-mouthed all year long that we weren’t that good and that we played easy guys — all that stuff. I think today we proved that we belong here in the playoffs.”

Billed as “The Battle of the Unbeatens,” the game was as compelling as expected, featuring more twists than a bowl of pretzels.

The Falcons struck first on their very first possession, converting a fourth-and-11 situation on a run by Swick and capping the drive with an 18-yard run by Akin on the next play. Swick added the two-point kick to make it 8-0 Lifegate.

Back came the Eagles, scoring on a five-yard run from junior Ian Roskow but missing their own point after attempt.

The Falcons answered by converting another fourth-and-long on an 18-yard strike from Akin to Swick, although the kick was blocked, leaving the tally 14-6.

The two clubs exchanged punts and turnovers-on-downs until the start of the second quarter, when Akin came up huge with a fumble recovery in Eagle territory.

Akin cashed it in himself six plays later on yet another fourth down try, somersaulting across the goal line after being upended by a Brenham Christian tackler. His acrobatics put the Falcons up 20-6, as another PAT was blocked by the Eagles.

From there, Brenham Christian ended the half with 16 unanswered points, entering the locker room with a scant, 22-20 lead thanks to a pair of Roskow runs and two successful PAT kicks.

Roskow proved to be the ultimate thorn in the Falcons’ side, finishing the game with five touchdowns runs — four of which coming from 30 or more yards away. “He’s good,” Rabon said of Roskow. “But it’s not just him, they also do a real good job of blocking.”

Lifegate came out of halftime looking rejuvenated, stuffing Brenham Christian’s first possession and scoring on an 18-yard pass from Swick to Tyler Swisher, with the one-point conversion added on pass from Swick to Akin.

From there, the Falcons padded their lead after a fumble recovery by Swick, going for broke on the very first play and hitting the jackpot on a 43-yard bomb from Akin to Swick. The successful kick made it 35-22 Lifegate, but Brenham Christian struck back immediately on back-to-back scoring runs that were sandwiched around a fourth down stop of the Falcons.

The Eagles then recovered a fumble and added a 37-yard run from Roskow to go up 42-35 before watching Swick take control on a 58-yard run down the left sideline. His kick was blocked, however, leaving Lifegate down a point.

And despite recovering the ensuing onside kick, the Falcons wouldn’t score again, ending the game with two fumbles, a punt and a turnover on downs.

“We felt like if we could get four or five stops and do our thing on offense, that we could win.,” Rabon said. “We got the four or five stops but in the second half we put the ball on the ground three times.”

But with the Falcons showing as much grit as they did Saturday, there’s no doubt what type of team Lifegate is — or how soon they’ll be heard from again.

“They’re just real courageous and they play hard and they love the game and just want to win,” Rabon said. “We believe we belong in the state game, and the kids and I and the other coaches are going to do what it takes to get there next year.”
