Regional Track Meets

Follett girls' 107 total team points. Second place was 43.

Region II's Chris Darnell of Trent was impressive in the 400 with a 50.38 and the 800 with a 2 min, Gill Taylor of Clyde with 15' pole vault, and Asher Rogers of WV with a 45-4.5 triple jump. Those are some good numbers!!!!!!!!

Kade Cowan won the 400 and the 800. He placed second in the 200. His sister took second in the 300 hurdles and 1600M. He's the defending State Champion in the 800, so those kids from Region II need to beat him before it can be claimed that their the best in the state.

sixman1992,

I wouldn't say that just yet. Last year Grady went into the State meet with the 5th fastest time in the 400 relay and won 2nd behind Paducah running a 43.7. Their previous fastest time was a 44.3. Region I was held with winds blowing between 30 and 50 MPH. It was much less than ideal for those kids! There are alot of athletes from region I who will better their times in Austin. Let the kids do it on the track against each other.

Basically anyone at the Region II meet. Pretty much the state meet
Kind of cocky, that should be expected from anyone from Region II.
You would do well to remember that it is track, and that all of the regional meets were held in different locations with different conditions. Saw where the Region I wind times were clocked at up to 50mph at times during the finals.
A kid with a slower time may have been faster had he been at another meet.
Example: Jordan Wright from Morgan, going into the state meet with the 8th fastest 100m time of 11.38.
I saw him run a 10.86 in Area. Even if you add the .24 to it because it was a hand held timer, you still get an 11.10, which would be #2 seed.

Good luck to all at state.

Grant McLain from Channing in both hurdle races in Region I, Div II was impressive. Set a record in the 110 hurdles that I think will stand for a long time (albeit is was considerably wind aided) and ran a really good time in 300's considering that the wind appeared to reach its peak about the time the 4 X 200 Relay started. Having been in attendance at the Region I meet in Levelland you always expect wind to blow some but not sustained winds of at least 30 mph and gusts of 40-50 mph. It is somewhat disappointing that there are a bunch of kids from Region I (both Div I & II) that were denied any chance (if the race had a curve in it) of getting the 'wild card' to the state meet because of weather. On both the boys and girls side there were quite a few kids that went into the Region I meet with a solid chance to make a run at the 'wild card' into the state meet and were denied any chance whatsoever by weather with only a couple of exceptions. On the other hand, there were a few instances on straight races where the kids got a boost from the wind and were able to secure 'wild card' berths that maybe would not have otherwise. So maybe it all evens out in the end, but still an unfortunate situation. Everyone still looks forward to an outstanding state meet from all of the kids who qualified. It is just unfortunate that we will never know for sure if the top 9 in every race really got to the state meet because of absolutely horrible weather on the south plains.

I thought the weather at Levelland was just grand! I am still cleaning dirt out of my ears!!! Grant McLain is impressive. My son has run against him a lot the last 4 years. I am partial, but I was pretty impressed with the two sophomores in the 800. The Roberts boy from Sanderson has run a 2:00 this year. The young man who took 2nd hasnt quite figured out how fast he can really run, but look out when he does. It would have been a good race if there had been 10 more meters (I know, when if and buts...) I am just stoked to finally get to go to the state meet!!! More importantly, I am stoked that both of my kiddos qualified. Very proud dad! I know whether my boys win or get last place, they will for sure enjoy the experience! Dont know how the wife is gonna handle me wanting to be there from the butt crack of dawn until the last race is run but I am gonna do my best to watch every minute. Prayers for safe travels for everyone going to Austin. It's only about an 8 hour trip for us northerners!

The UIL takes wind into consideration for the 100m, 200m, Long Jump, and Triple Jump, when figuring the "Wild Card." Once you make a full lap, (i.e. the 400) how can anyone say that the wind hurt them? It is a full lap, so as soon as you get to the other side, that same wind is at your back... As for Region 2, I guess we wil will just have to see...

If there aren't wind meters, the UIL doesn't take into account "wind aided" times and distances when figuring the wild card. The only way wind is taken to consideration is by the meet director when it's decided which direction competitors will run and jump.

The thing the UIL needs to address is the lack of consistency in the Regional meet formats. I understand Region 1 had terrible wind. Region 2 dealt with a meet schedule that was crammed together, and athletes did not enjoy the recovery time enjoyed by Region 1 between field events and running events on both days.

In my opinion, if UIL is going to select a wild card, meet formats need to be consistent among all 4 regions. Weather will always be a factor - I understand that it will never be equal in a state the size of Texas, but to have field events being interrupted by running events is ridiculous when there are only 16 competitors in an event. In addition to lack of recovery time, there was very little time allowed for practicing handoffs for relays.

I am not insinuating that Region 2 is better than Region 1 - weather conditions were different for the regional meets. My point is that both regions had adversity to deal with. It should be a great state meet May 9-10, with great competition from all 4 regions. Good luck to all.
