Stamford sprinters lead race to Austin

A quintet of sprinters from Stamford, led by Jerrick Acosta and Barry Bailey, overcame memories of last year's relay disappointment in convincing fashion Saturday at the Region II-1A boys track and field championships held at a damp Elmer Gray Stadium track facility.

Acosta won the 100-meter dash, Bailey captured the 200 and the Bulldogs won the 800 relay and finished second in the 400 relay. Those 56 points were almost enough to give Stamford the team trophy, but Tolar came from behind to win the meet's final running event to score 20 points and finish with 62 points.

In Region II-1A girls track and field, Bonnie Richardson, the talented senior from Rochelle, won three more events Saturday to single-handedly win the team title with 48 points for the Hornets.

After winning the 100 (12.47) and 200 (25.48) earlier Saturday, Richardson waited for the rain-delayed high jump, the final girls event. She opened at 4-8 and had first-attempt clearances at every bar until 5-8, which she sailed over on her second jump before missing three times at 5-10.

Those 10 points moved her from fourth place with 38 points to first place with 48 points ahead of Hamlin (46), Knox City (44) and Seymour (38).

Richardson won all five events at the Abilene Christian regional last year to score 50 points, but she was well back of runaway team champion Hamlin at 82 points.

On Friday, Richardson advanced to the Austin meet June 5-6 in the long jump and discus throw, She'll attempt to repeat as "team" champion in the Class 1A state meet.

Acosta, despite having only the fourth fastest time in Friday's 100-meter qualifying, edged past Northside's Colby White, Perrin's Michael Drake and Santo's Keaton Mata in a tight battle in Saturday's final. The winner ran 11.13 to win by .01 in the cool, windy afternoon weather after the morning rains.

"I pushed it the last 15 meters," Acosta said. "It was pretty close with those three guys. I've worked hard all year, and I'm ready to go to Austin."

A senior at Stamford, Acosta won the 100 at district and area meets earlier this season. He will be making his second trip to Austin for the state meet June 5-6 after qualifying as a sophomore in the 800 relay.

"Yesterday (Friday) I ran in the slow heat," he said, "and I wasn't pushed too hard. I knew I could do it today (Saturday). Knowing this is my last year, I've worked hard to be a leader. I had to step up."

Bailey won the 200 in 22.41, and White was again second in 22.51 after running 11.14 behind Acosta in the 100.

"I practice hard every week," Bailey said, "and I came out here and did what my coach said. I ran the curve about three-quarters (speed), then turned on the juice and brought it on home."

Later, in the 800 relay, Acosta came from third in his anchor 200 to overtake Tolar and Haskell runners for the victory in 1:32.11. Bailey started the winning relay, followed by Cameron McDonald and Nathan Escabedo before Acosta supplied the heroics.

The Rattlers were a close second in 1:32.19.

Last year, Stamford dropped the baton on the final exchange in the 400 relay at the Region II-A meet to deny the Bulldogs a berth in the state meet.

In Saturday's opening running event, Stamford finished as runnerup to Meridian, 43.54 to 43.79, with Acosta following Bailey, McDonald and Jamie West in the Bulldogs relay lineup.

Tolar's victory in the 1600 relay in 3:27.24 moved the team from fourth to first place overall.

Roscoe produced two boys champions Saturday. Zach Gutierrez held off his challengers to win the 1600 in 4:44.43, and sophomore Caden Smith was best in the shot put with 53-9¼. Smith returns to Austin, where he was an important part of the Plowboys' state championship basketball team.

Other Region II-A boys champions included Jonathan Martinez of Haskell in the 300 hurdles (40.54), Robert Rosson of Bronte in the 110 hurdles (14.98) and Derrick Coleman of Knox City in the 400 (50.33).

In the pole vault, Marcus Nabors of Albany and Dalton Strickland of Meridian both cleared 13-0, but Strickland's first-attempt clearance gave him the title after Nabors needed two attempts. Both missed three times at 13-6.

Other Region II-A girls champions included Knox City in the 400 relay (51.30), Munday in the 800 relay (1:47.84), Jaylen Rogers of Hamlin in the 800 (2:26.16), Suzette Viertel of Albany in the 300 hurdles (47.26) and Kim Williams of Roby in the shot put (43-1½).

Winters produced two more regional winners Saturday. Jessica Rodriguez followed Friday's win in the,200 with a victory in the 1600 in 5:33.29, and Leeann Taylor raced to victory in the 100 hurdles in 15.63.
