MIAMI (AP) -- Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor has died, a day after he was shot in the leg, said family friend Richard Sharpstein.

He said Taylor's father called him around 5:30 a.m. to tell him the news.

"His father called and said he was with Christ and he cried and thanked me," said Sharpstein, Taylor's former lawyer. "It's a tremendously sad and unnecessary event. He was a wonderful, humble, talented young man, and had a huge life in front of him. Obviously God had other plans."

He said he did not know exactly when Taylor died.

Doctors had been encouraged late Monday night when Taylor squeezed a nurse's hand. But Sharpstein said he was told Taylor never regained consciousness after being transported to the hospital and that he wasn't sure how he had squeezed the nurse's hand.

"Maybe he was trying to say goodbye or something," Sharpstein said.

The 24-year-old Redskins safety was shot early Monday in his home in the upper leg, damaging an artery and causing significant blood loss.

It's really sad. He had some run-in's with the law, and I guess he'd made an enemy somewhere along the way. Because this is such a high-profile murder, they'll find the person who did it.

man, this is such a sad story. i dont even like the redskins. i always knew he was such a successful player in college and the few years in the NFL. He was a heck of free safety.....one of hardest hitters in the league, and one of fastest safeties in the NFL.

I know he has had his share of off field problems, but many of these kids that go from rags to riches in the NFl often have a hard time adjusting. Its just so sad, he is a young man. a year younger than i am, with a daughter the same age as my son.....it's just hard to imagine.

when i heard he was shot in the leg.....i suddenly thought, ah, thats no big deal...he will sit out the rest of the year and be back next year. then i heard he had severed his artery and had flat-lined twice during an extensive 7 hr surgery...i knew it was much more serious.
Then i saw clinton portis on ESPN last night almost crying talking about it...and i knew again then something was wrong. Then i get a text message this morning from one of my friends who is a huge MIAMI HURRICANE fan saying RIP Sean Taylor.
and while i never knew him, never seen him other than TV, wasnt a fan of any team he had ever played for, i was a little sad. its just a horrible, horrible story.

There are so many unanswered questions left here...
Why didnt he leave his home after the first 2 break-ins?
Why didnt he for sure know that a message was sent when a knife was left at the foot of his bed after 2nd break-in?
why didnt he hire security, or go to a 5star hotel just to get he and his family away?
Why would an intruder target him and specifically him, there must be a mllion questions to possible answers there?

Its just a sad day in the NFL..... as in the words of my friend

RIP SEAN TAYLOR
and god bless his fiance and daughter Jackie
