Pay The Coach!

Question: Should high school coaches be paid to only coach and should they be paid full time to only coach their sports (maybe a second sport) instead of being a teacher and coach?

Many high school coaches are teachers and I feel that if they had more time to work with the players, they could do a better job with the development of the kids.

In most states, outside of Texas, coaches (even HEAD FOOTBALL COACHES) often carry a full teaching schedule in addition to their coaching duties. In fact, Texas public schools are among the few states that restrict coaching duties to full time employees ... you'll find in other states, coaches are part-time or stipend employees. And I can make a case that it has promoted professionalism among coaches in this state.

Is that right? Well, that's another discussion and I can make arguments either way ... for example, if the district needs a golf coach and a science teacher, do you hire a science teacher who knows nothing about golf or a golf coach that knows nothing about science?

There's a balance ... and it will always be difficult finding that proper equilibrum between school and coaching/athletics.

I'll second that after seeing what happens here in Illinoisy, especially in the private/parochial schools. Most of the coaches are part-time stipend coaches with a full time job outside the school. The level of professionalism is low. One school in particular would win state every year if they truly had a more professional coaching staff.

It will cost a lot of money to pay the high school coach but if that means helping the players get scholarship then what's the big deal. In some cities high school sports is a big deal pay the coach. I think the coach could do more with the players during the day with recruiting.
