Out of state games

Why haven't there been hardly any out of state games in the past few years? I'm sure they have the money with all the new football fields and turf to travel. It's my opinion that six man could grow even more if it expanded and took on schools not in the same state.

Last week Amherst played Dora, NM, on Sept 6, El Paso Faith played Lake Arthur, NM, and on Aug 30, El Paso Jesus Chapel played Lake Arthur, NM.

I guess I need to look at more schedules. I would just like to see one of Texas's top teams vs a top team in some other respective state. The El Paso schools playing New Mexico teams isn't my idea of out of state.

Does the uil even allow teams to travel out of state to play?

Not sure what the UIL rule is, but TAPPS requires approval before any game can be played against an out-of-state opponent (even if you host the game). Basically, they want to assure you are playing a true school team, not a club team. Usually, if the opposing school is a member of a state association, it's a formality. But a couple of years ago, a six-man team was reprimanded by TAPPS for scheduling a game against an out-of-state team without prior approval. (Info at:

As for out-of-state opponents, most of them will be the New Mexico schools; occasionally there seems to be a game against a Colorado school or the game at Robert Lee this year with the Wyoming school.

If my information is right, there are only 10 sixman schools in New Mexico: Lake Arthur, Animas, Dora, Hondo, Vaughn, San Jon/Grady, Roy/Wagon Mound, Floyd, Reserve and NM School of the Deaf. There are 11 schools playing 8-man, including private schools Roswell Gateway Christian and Clovis Christian/Melrose. Sounds like NM is allowing schools to join as "co-ops," such as San Jon/Grady, Roy/Wagon Mound and Melrose/Clovis Christian, where two schools combine to form one team.

Also, most out-of-state teams play under the National Federation of State High School Associations: NFHS (nfhs.org) and "most" of the Texas teams play under under the NCAA/UIL/League rules model. There are some rule differences such as - no blocking below the waist period in the out-of-state rules.

I have not performed an in depth research on this and going from memory.
