Offensive Scheme

Hello new coach here! I was looking at offenses and our team run a spread last year which I want to continue to do, but want to go away from the pitch to the S back and move him up a little to help block.

My question is, is it easy to defend against if the QB has to throw. Is it just better in the spread just to pitch it to the S back? We didn’t throw a lot last year and I have good WRs I want to get the ball to, but my S back last year said the reason he didn’t throw more is those balls we long throws.

If my idea is crazy and has no chance of working let me know

I have ran an empty spread before using motions and formational shifts to create time for my Spread back. My alignment was 2x2 or 2x4 yards from the center. Distance of 8-10 yards from center to Spread back. It is very effective!!!

Well coach, as someone who is very knowledgeable about the six man football game, I too often find myself wanting to go away from what all the good teams do! I would say that running empty sets and snapping it to the directly to the quarterback is a great idea! You may find that your run game gets slightly worse with this approach, but if you have the good wide receivers, then who needs a run game?!

Also thank you for posting that game footage in this thread! I hope you don't mind if I still a few plays from that to build my new playbook!

Anything I can pass along to you, I have no issues with you using coach. I used the terminology of jet, jet fake, or motion. For instance if I came out in a 2x1 or 3x0 set with the offset TE on the right or left, I would send any of my 3 WRS in motion.
Ace right (strong side tight end)-y jet (handoff to the y wr).
Ace right (strong side tight end)-y jet (handoff to the y wr)-49 (X wr runs a quick slant route-Z wr runs a deep ball on the right) this is a RPO where the WR has the option to pass or run.
Ace right (strong side tight end)-y jet fake (faking the handoff to the y wr)-49 (X wr runs a quick slant route-Z wr runs a deep ball on the right).
Ace right (strong side tight end)-y motion (Y wr motions into the backfield to block)-49 (X wr runs a quick slant route-Z wr runs a deep ball on the right)

Let me know if you have any questions

Best regards,
Coach Michael Spaulding

What you are talking about doing is not foolish at all. When teams are good at running dead QB passing based offenses it is a real problem. Here are some recommendation for teams to study:

A good team to look into would be Fort Worth Covenant. They run their offense out of a number of dead snap 2x1 / 3x0 sets very effectively the past few years.

Here is some film from a high scoring game on YouTube: FW vs Richland Springs

Another team to study is Kingdom Prep in Lubbock, they have adapted air raid concepts to 6man football with good success. Their head coach is active on X, here is a link to his profile : https://x.com/griffithqbcoach
