Mighty Mites

I just read in the Fort Worth Star Telegram that Jim Dent's book Twelve Mighty Orphans is being made into a movie starring Luke Wilson. Way Cool!

It's going to be set in the 1930's so I don't guess they will show them playing Strawn in 2002 after they moved up to sixman.

Wilson will play Masonic Home Coach Rusty Russell, inventor of the spread offense who went on to coach at SMU. The book was so great. It could turn out to be a good movie.

Best sports book I’ve ever read. Glad they are finally making a movie. It’s Hoosiers meets Texas HS Football. It’s great!

Good deal,I saw Masonic Home play at Trinidad several years ago, I remember sitting on the Mighty Mites side with maybe two others.

I was wondering when they started playing 6 man. So I searched on Lone Star Football and found this:

Looks like they quit playing 11 man after 1997 then took up 6 man in 2000. Last year was 2004. One good year in 2001 going 10-3. All through the 1990's they played only 1,2 or four games a year. The Home used to sit on a hill off by itself, always looked kind of forlorn to me. It was just north and east of the intersection of I 35 W and I 20. I think the site has now high end apartments or condo's on it now. We would pass it coming and going from the mid cities to Possum Kingdom. It made me think how tough it would be to loose both parents as a child and no one else to take you in.

An article in the Sunday paper says Robert Duvall and Martin Sheen have joined the cast. Sheen to play Doc Hall, the school and team doctor for 30 years, never paid, also responsible for bring Russell to the orphanage. Duvall to play an older wise Free Mason who was an orphan. Production began this month in Fort Worth.

Masonic Home played as a TAPPS member for a number of years, I remember we played them in a girls basketball playoff game up in West, Texas (on IH-35) around 2002 or so. Not sure how long they were in TAPPS, but they were able to move to UIL as a charter school sometime in the last 10-12 years.

I read the book out of the Tarleton library and don't have a copy available for reference. Trying to remember the names of two brothers who starred for their best teams in the book. One went on to the NFL for several years, maybe all pro a year or two. But known as one of the dirtiest players as well? On Defense in the NFL if I remember right?
