Six-man pro
My December TM arrived today and lo and behold, there on page 82 (and publicized on the front cover: "Three Cheers for Marfa's Six-Man Football") is a nice article entitled "Friday Night Lite," talking the joys and sorrows of six-man football by Sterry Butcher.

As you'd expect, it was a life in the small town story about a town and its football team. Part of the story was a young man, 14 years old, who felt ill during a pickup soccer game (he was a player on the Marfa JV football team) and died from asthma at the Alpine hospital later that day. Players hold his 85 jersey when they stand for the national anthem and start of the game.

The writer covered their game against El Paso Home School (Marfa won 46-0).

Which reminds me, I'm about four months behind on reading my Texas Monthlys. I guess I'll take them on my trip next week.

The young man collapsed on the field that day. Marfa's ambulance was on a run, and we had to wait for the ambulance to arrive from Ft. Davis. Several administered CPR for 40 minutes or so. He was a great young man, and I think of him often. Marfa's team carries his jersey as a captain at every game. It was a season to remember...lots of highs and lots of lows.

Thanks for posting. It has been sitting here in the plastic, waiting to be opened.

Sorry to hear about the young man....
