Lifegate football camp takes flight

SEGUIN — On a six-man football team, every player has to know how to do a little bit of everything.
With such limited numbers, seemingly anybody with a jersey and helmet could be called upon to punt, pass, kick — or even snap — at a moment’s notice.
That’s exactly why Lifegate Falcons head coach John Rabon enlisted eight of his high school players to help teach young athletes during the school’s football camp this week. And so far, the coach says, the camp has produced positive results for everyone involved.
“It’s kind of a time where they can bond with the kids and the kids can be around those high school players,” Rabon said. “It’s good for both of them. It’s good for the older kids because they get to be in that leadership role and be the big brother or whatever you want to call it, and it’s good for the kids because they get hands-on instruction from guys that they look up to, so it’s really a win-win situation.”
One of the players who volunteered to help coach is junior Matt Akin — an All-District selection a year ago. He said he enjoys teaching the kids and tries to keep them smiling throughout the drills.
“It’s been fun,” Akin said. “We’ve had some laughs and whatnot, but it’s just good to watch the kids learn and get to share the knowledge that we’ve picked up over the years and put it to use.”
But after the laughs are over, Akin and his teammates get down to business preparing for the new football season, which is quickly approaching.
“On Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. we have non-mandatory workouts that get pretty intense — powerlifting and conditioning,” Akin said. “We’re staying in shape.”
The first day of practice for Lifegate is Monday, Aug. 3, with the first scrimmage scheduled just 12 days later.
But right now, it’s all about the kids.
“It feels good to know that we’re doing something rather than just being out for ourselves,” Akin said.
