They used to do that in Basketball. I'm sure you all remember the Texas cup. I think they took the Texas cup out because they felt it sucked for the team that goes and wins state and then has to turn around the next day and lose. Especially in the years where Division 1 would be stacked and D2 would have a way less talented team.
