I do's, other events collide with Packers playoff game

This happens every "unscheduled" Packer game (ie, playoffs, game time changes, Christmas Eve/Day games) in Green Bay. I remember in my youth, the Pastor at any Catholic Church would pass off the late masses to the assistants, because he usually had tickets to the games...)

In fact, I've already advised my wife that our son's birthday party needs to be over in time for the kickoff on Saturday.

Jan. 12 match at Lambeau shuffles, cancels some plans

Beth Zaidel and Luke Beno scheduled their wedding 11 months ago, settling on 3 p.m. Jan. 12 at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church in Ashwaubenon.

A quiet winter day for a wedding ceremony

But that changed when the National Football League announced that the Green Bay Packers would host a divisional playoff game just a few blocks north of the church and a half-hour after the wedding is scheduled to begin.

The wedding is just one of many events in the area impacted by an unusual conflict — a Packers' football game on Saturday. Some events have been rescheduled, reworked or even canceled because of the competition with the 3:30 p.m. playoff game at Lambeau Field. Packers fans also are changing their travel plans to make sure they can watch the game.

"We were obviously hoping for a Sunday game," Zaidel said.

Nativity rents parking space for ticket holders, but a parish spokesperson said there would still be room for the wedding guests, some of whom likely will be arriving at the same time that game traffic fills South Oneida Street.

The couple's reception will be held at the Swan Club at Legends in De Pere, which has agreed to open a half-hour earlier than scheduled and set up a large-screen TV.

"The dinner is at 6:30 so we're hopeful that will be just as the game finishes up," said Zaidel, who expects 300 people at the dinner.

Green Bay Community Church decided not to compete with the Packers, canceling its service at 5 p.m. Jan. 12, said Joan Johnson, the church's arts and community events director.

"The last time we held a service during a Packers game, two people showed up," she said. "We have other service options for people, and we love the Packers."

Kathi Madison, travel consultant at Sunshine Travel in De Pere, said many people are changing their travel schedules because of the game.

"It truly is amazing," Madison said. "It's pretty crazy, but people are trying to reschedule trips or find a way to come back earlier because of the game.

UWGB women, others reschedule

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay women's basketball game has been moved up to noon Jan. 12 because of the Green Bay Packers home playoff game at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 12.

The Green Bay Gamblers hockey team moved its Jan. 12 game against Cedar Rapids to the next day at 1:05 p.m. at the Resch Center.

"It's the cost of doing business next door to the Packers," said Terry Charles, public relations manager for the team.

The hockey team also postponed its Caps for Cancer Toss promotion that raises money for the American Cancer Society. The fundraiser, which raised $4,000 last year, was set for Jan. 11 but was moved to Feb. 1 when the Packers announced plans to hold a pep rally at the same time.

Chad Sodoni, athletic director at Peshtigo High School, wasn't going to call off a 16-team wrestling invitational on Jan. 12, but he made some changes.

"We usually start at 10 a.m., but we're going to start at 9 a.m. and limit the breaks," Sodoni said. "We're hoping to be finished by the time the game starts."

I can remember from my misspent youth the preacher would cut short his sermon when the Cowboys played at noon so that everyone would have time to get home in time for the kickoff........

Heck, in Packer Country, the preachers would skip the sermon ... there's always next week.
