House bill 347/senate bill 391

I think it's wrong... If a parent wants their child to play football for a school, then they should enroll in that school. If they are home school then the school district is not receiving any tax money for said student. Why should the school spend money to provide the opportunity for the home school child to participate in their sports? I disagree with this.

Quote from the article

“Discriminating against homeschooled children based on the educational choices their parents make for them is detrimental to these children’s development and prevents them from accessing the same opportunities as their peers,”

Discriminating???
Based on parents CHOICES???

Hey Jesus!! Whenever you are ready....

This bill will set up a situation that will be very ripe for abuse as a way to get around scholastic suspensions. It is wrapped up in "good intentions" just like the early voting and motor voter registrations.

As an example, I would point to the Prime Prep situation a few years ago.

I'm opposed to the bill, because it opens an ugly door for the state to try to monitor home-schools. But you DO know that homeschool families pay property taxes, just like everyone else, right?!? (Except for illegal immigrants...but I digress). The homeschool families' argument (whether I agree or not) is that BECAUSE they're already paying for the public schools' facilities, then they should be allowed to benefit from those taxes.

Other families, like mine, pay their property taxes...THEN pay tuition at private schools.

I am a Home School Coach, and fully oppose this and/or any legislation similar in nature. The families (mine included) have made the decision to preclude our students/athletes from the school system- We are blessed to live in a state that provides us this option.

It is the parents choice to opt-out of the school system- that decision comes with both positives and negatives. You are either all in, or all out- you can't cherry pick the pieces and parts that you want "as a tax payer"... The school district is NOT an al-a-carte restaurant menu where you can decide what does and does not apply.

If athletics are important to your student athlete, it falls back on the families to rally together to put together a team/activity to meet that need. There are some fantastic organizations (contrary to the article- most fall outside of TCAL and are either part of TAIAO, or are independents) that not only play 6 Man football, but basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, etc...

Those teams and organizations are run by groups of volunteers that give hundreds of hours of dedicated volunteer work to make those groups a reality for their student athletes. We are proud of the organizations we have built and our student athletes compete head to head with many of the best programs in the state across several sports.

Thank you for allowing me time on the soapbox...I now step down!!
