Freddy vs Lifegate - Nov 1

Gosh, it's been a busy week. Over at Lifegate, it's what has been known as Freddy week, the week when the annual Lifegate vs Heritage game is on the schedule.

First, it's a rematch of the 2012 TAPPS D2 title game. Second, although the Eagles have a 7-4 series lead, Lifegate has won four of the last five.

Third, it will have a lot to do with the final district standings. Castle Hills leads the district with a 3-0 record, as does Lifegate. Heritage is 2-1, with a loss to Castle Hills. Castle Hills is favored over San Antonio New Life Christian, so they should be 4-0 after tonight unless the six-man version of the old NFL rule, "On any given Sunday" applies.

A Heritage win puts both teams at 3-1, with Lifegate at Castle Hills in week 10. Lifegate wins, and there's a three way tie which would be determined on point differentials (right now, Castle Hills is +14 on Heritage).

A Lifegate win means that week 10 is for the district title. (Heritage would probably finish 3rd in that scenario).

And of course, Castle Hills only needs to win out to make this all academic.

27-26 Lifegate.

After about a minute of play, it's 6-6. I'm thinking the scoreboard is gonna be spinning faster than the slots in Vegas.

But defense took hold; still 6-6 at half and almost 3 minutes into the third before Lifegate scores three times to take a 27-6 lead after three quarters.

Heritage scores just as the fourth quarter starts and is down 27-20 with about 1:30 left; I think just one time out left and drives down to the 5 or 10 yard line with :18 left and scores with 1 tick left on the clock to take it to 27-26. Heritage sets up to kick the 2 pt PAT (Lifegate had blocked two of their three prior tries) and fakes for one with Kenny Cramblitt tackling the Heritage player at about the 1 foot line to prevent overtime.

Makes next week's Lifegate at Castle Hills game for all the marbles in the district.

One heck of a game.

Thank you freeagent for this summary of the game. I wish more posters would provide to those of us that can not attend a game details like you have. Posts like this would make this site much more interesting.

All you people that travel every weekend to games would do much better to post summaries like this. Snarkey comments during the week leading to games I can tolerate but real information about the games is what I would like to read. I will do my best to post game summaries in the future. I hope others do so too.

Falcons hold off Heritage in thrilling 27-26 win

FREDERICKSBURG — The Lifegate Falcons traveled to Fredericksburg Friday night to take on the Heritage Eagles for what turned out to be a battle of the defenses for both teams.

Lifegate (5-4, 4-0) held on for a thrilling 27-26 win after withstanding a late comeback attempt from Heritage (5-4, 2-2).

With no timeouts remaining and the clock running down from 10 seconds, the Eagles scored on a pass with one second left to come within a point of the Falcons.

Not taking a chance on a blocked PAT, Heritage ran a trick play to try and tie the game but was stopped short when seniors Patrick Haley and Kenny Cramblitt tackled the rusher short of the goal line, securing the Falcons’ win.

“This was the best we’ve played all season,” said Lifegate head coach John Rabon. ”This was one of those games everyone likes to see, especially when you’re on the winning side.

“We were able to make our extra point attempts count tonight while stopping the Eagles on theirs. Defensively the boys did very well holding the Eagles running game.”

It was homecoming for the Eagles and before the opening kickoff the game ball was delivered by a helicopter landing on the field just after the national anthem. The new lights at Heritage Stadium lit up the field and both teams were ready for their annual meeting.

Offensively, the Falcons received the opening kickoff and moved the ball quickly up the field in their first series, taking only 45 seconds to score on a 12-yard pass to Josh Dodson.

After the Falcon kickoff, the Eagles responded on a long play of their own. On its first play from scrimmage, Heritage rushed 55 yards to even the score. Haley blocked the extra point attempt and the score was tied at 6-6.

With both teams making adjustments defensively, the Falcons and Eagles began to trade defensive stops.

Lifegate fumbled the ball late in the second quarter, which gave Heritage a golden opportunity to take a halftime lead. At midfield, the Eagles called a timeout with three seconds remaining in the half to set up their play.

With heavy defensive pressure, Heritage threw deep hoping for a score, but the pass was picked off by Jacob Reneau, who returned the ball 60 yards before being brought down by a touchdown-saving tackle to end the half.

A 6-6 halftime score in six-man football is rare but not unexpected for these two teams when they compete each year. The game would change after the half, but in a much different way.

The Falcons came out with a pass offense that appeared to turn the tide for good. Cramblitt ran for 24 yards on the opening drive and set up his own 13-yard score. Attempting the point after, the ball was fumbled on the exchange but was picked up by Reneau, who threw in heavy traffic to find Dodson for the extra point.

Lifegate’s defense held strong in the third quarter, causing a turnover on downs. The Falcons took advantage of the stand, scoring on the next series with a 19-yard pass to Reneau from Cramblitt to make it a two-score lead for the Falcons, 21-6.

Victory looked certain when the Falcons held the Eagles a second consecutive time, and on the next Lifegate possession, freshman Michael McKinney caught a short pass and ran 34 yards to up the score to 27-6.

Offensively, the fourth quarter belonged to Heriatge, which scored on a 6-yard run set up by a 46-yard run the play before to close the gap at 27-20 after Haley blocked his second point after attempt.

The blocked extra points by Haley proved to be the plays of the game for the Falcons.

“When we got up 27-6, the boys slacked off defensively and let them back in the game,” Rabon said. “But they did what they needed to do to win.”

The Falcons will take their perfect district record to Castle Hills in San Antonio Friday where they will play the Eagles. The game will determine who will take the district championship, as both teams are undefeated. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

By the way, my compliments to the announcer at Heritage for his musical selections ... Sounded like the old radio "Hits of the 1980s all request weekend!" Even had the Lifegate mommas dancing on the field after the game!
