Clock managment question

What is the rule on clock running after gaining a 1st down? does it stop to adjust chains and then restarted or does the clock continue to run on 1st down gained.

Assuming the first down is gained inbounds with no other administrative stoppages, the game clock stops on the official's signal at the end of the play. The game clock will start back up again on the Referee's signal (winding the clock) once the ball is spotted again for play. The chains themselves don't have anything to do with when the R will wind the clock.
