Castle Hills 65 - Seguin Lifegate 56

I have been waiting for Free Agent to make the post here on the Castle Hills (CH) - Seguin Lifegate (SL) game because his post last week on SL - Freddy was superb but I thought maybe he did not get to see the game so I will add an inadequate report.

The final score of CH 65 - SL 56 indicates a barn burner and it truly was. The first quarter was very even until SL created two turnovers and took over throughout the second quarter, pulling ahead 44-22 with less than 2 minutes left in the half. CH made a last gasp try to close the gap at half time and their fast powerful running back #5 broke multiple tackles on a 30 yard run to close the half with a 44-30 score and breathe life into the CH team.

SL controlled the 1st half with a potent passing attack, especially numerous long drag routes across the middle of the field for 20 and 30 yard gains. #28 and #26 were especially productive and the QB #31 controlled the game with his running and passing. He seemed to make one great decision after another with short passes to running backs followed by deep crossing and post routes and then perfect passes into the corner of the end zone once CH tried to stop the middle passing routes.

The second half was all CH with them scoring 35 points to SL's 12 second half points. The momentum seemed to swing immediately as the 3rd quarter opened up and #5 for CH seemed to wear out the SL defense with tough run after tough run. His one mistake in the game was a fumble after a run of twenty yards but the CH receiver #8 scooped it up and took it for a TD run of 40 yards. The sudden turn around of that play seemed to rob SL of its first half mojo.

Then CH started stopping SL with regularity in the second half with numerous pass deflections and a strong pass rush by #5. On several occasions, SL drove down to the red zone but they were turned back on downs. Defensively, #8 had at least a dozen open field tackles on some very fast receivers. The CH QB #7 had a good game throwing short passes to # 8 and several long passes to #8. I would guess they connected on 3 TD passes. The rest of the CH scoring seemed to come from #5 who broke long run after long run and physically wore down the SL defense. The blocking by the CH line was excellent all night, but particularly #77 who is one of the larger and stronger players I have seen this year.

CH extra point kicking in the second half helped increase the lead as the 3rd quarter ended 65-50. Interestingly enough, for a game that had 115 points in the first three quarters, the defenses dominated the 4th quarter and held both teams to a total of 6 points. CH was content to wisely run out the clock at this point taking up 3 and 4 minutes on 2 drives of primarily all runs. Both drives stalled deep in SL territory, but drained the time to a point where SL had little chance to rally. SL drove to the 5 yard line with less than 2 minutes left but the CH defense made two great defensive stops to force SL to turn the ball over on downs.

A great 6 man game by two teams I think may go deep into the playoffs. Both teams seemed to show excellent sportsmanship, toughness and character. I suspect it is easy to be a fan of either of theses programs.

I was there ... just got home.

Castle Hills could have packed it up and we all could have gone home early when Lifegate was up 28-6; late in the second and in the second half, the Eagles figured they were going to win if they ran the ball (with Dante, #5). The report posted above was pretty spot on.

Lifegate gave up about 30 unanswered points and it got from 44-22 Lifegate to 65-50 Castle Hills pretty quick; the ball took some very fortunate Castle Hills bounces, and that helped them get in the game.

Lifegate could have packed it in then, but they fought to make it close, down to the 3 or 4 with a minute plus left in the game, turning it over on downs. Congrats to the Eagles; I really thought we would win this one.

(Oh, and a hint to out-of-town teams playing playoff games in San Antonio: Insist on refs from TASO Chapter in Austin. The folks that call 6 man for TASO and AOA are pretty bad -- and that's not just from tonight's game. For example, in one case, a measurement was called for. Instead of taking the sticks to the ball, the officials reset the ball at the hash and then brought the chains in ... a simple mechanics rule.)

I would agree with Free Agent although I have no idea what TASO and AQA stand for. The most blatant missed call was in the second quarter when one of the CH linemen came in clear on the SL QB and sacked him. Somehow, the ref called a face mask call although it was not close to a face mask. Changed a 4th and 22 play into a 1st and 10 play, with SL scoring several plays later and kept CH from crawling back into the game in the 2d quarter instead of the 3rd quarter.

I thought that was a good call :)

They missed a blatant interference call against Castle Hills, though. Also let a lot of clock run when it shouldn't have, but then again, that's not always noticed on the field and it didn't affect the outcome.

TASO is the main sports officials group in Texas (Texas Assn. of Sports Officials) and has about 18-20 area chapters throughout the state. Our district rules require use of the TASO chapters in San Antonio or Austin (Lifegate and Heritage use the Austin chapter, who does have some pretty decent 6 man refs).

AOA is a local group (I think Alamo Officials Assn), has excellent volleyball officials but I have never been a fan of their football or basketball crews.
