This was a great game between two well coached teams and excellent players that represented their schools in superb fashion.
Congratulations to both teams, all their coaches and all their fans. And congratulations to DIstrict 4 for again placing both teams in the finals.
It seems 65 was a good number for Castle Hills as they managed to score that same number against Seguin Lifegate twice and against Fredericksburg Heritage once.
This was a classic championship game that was tied 38-38 going into the final quarter. It was not until the final minute of the fourth quarter that this game was decided.
Fredericksburg Heritage looked like they used the extra days of practice to their full advantage during the first two quarters as they jumped out to a 30-13 lead midway through at the 2nd Quarter. The usual suspects of Joe Meeks and Chad Johnson sliced up the CH defense and FH utilized their always excellent blocking to establish the early lead. Although Dante Johnson was spectacular on multiple occasions, CH had numerous other players step up to include a 70 yard reception by Jacob Sily to keep the game close in the 2nd quarter and drive stopping interceptions by Marshall Grant and Ethan Leos.
Although trailing 38- 25 at halftime and fully realizing that Fredericksburg Heritage would be receiving the 2nd half kickoff, Castle Hills remained calm and made some great halftime adjustments, especially moving Ethan Leos and Dante Johnson around from safety to linebacker to defensive lineman depending on the FH formations. Fredericksburg Heritage only managed 6 second half points even though they were inside the CH 20 yard line multiple times in the 2nd half. The CH bend but don't break defense worked to perfection in that second half and Micah Allmand made several QB sacks that kept FH from mounting a comeback and an onside kick recovery that enabled CH to score the tying TD in the 3rd quarter..
Several key plays changed the momentum of the game. The first was a 60 yard scoop and score defensive fumble recovery by Ethan Leos, a late TD reception by Michael Chairez on fourth down (a gutsy offensive call in which I am sure everyone thought it was going to be another Johnson run) and an offensive fumble recovery TD by Ethan Leos. But with the game in the balance, Dante Johnson again showed his toughness and determination with several indescribable runs. He was all over the field, weaving around and running through the excellent FH defense. Time after time he took over the game whether it was a solid five yard run dragging three players with him or a 60 yard dash down the sideline. On virtually every play, offensively and defensively, his presence was felt.
