What are the best periods during the school day for JH/HS athletics? First and Last, First, Middle, & Last, First, and Last two? Any other ways that work?
At Sands we had it in the morning in JH and right before lunch in HS. I always hated that. I much preferred last period at Grady, especially when staying after for practice.
I am not sure if it is "the best," but we have the majority of our high school athletes in the weight room the last period of the day. It forces us to start practice with meetings and film to try and give them some time to recover before practice. On days where we go straight to the field after strength and conditioning we are very drained.
I would think it would be nice to do the lifting in the morning, gives plenty of time to recover before practice. We do not have showers though so it is not an option.
I know a lot of people that prefer last period because they can just continue to practice but you miss out on quite a bit of time throughout the year. Travel and possible pep rally take out any type of gameday prep. JV's during basketball season won't get walk throughs due to travel or even on home games depending on when your school day ends. You also miss practice time in general or practices are entirely too long and you don't get much out of it. I also like the separation because it forces you to be very specific and organized for the athletic period. The split is great in the spring because you can cover multi-sport athletes.
Our current setup is pretty solid. Girls isn't great but better than last period.
Boys- lift before school, athletic period before lunch
Girls- lift before school, athletic period 7th (8period day)
JH- both boys and girls have 1st period athletics
