Are you ready for some football on Wednesday night?
Get ready, because it’s coming this season, and it could involve the Packers.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced this afternoon that the 2012 season-opening game will be played on Wednesday, Sept. 5 (NBC, 7:30 PM CST).
The game was moved from the traditional Thursday night opener to avoid a conflict with President Barack Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention.
As the defending Super Bowl champions, the New York Giants will host the game at MetLife Stadium.
Their opponent hasn’t been determined, but the Packers are scheduled to play on the road against the Giants this season. A matchup between the last two Super Bowl champions would be attractive.
Last year the NFL opted to stage such a matchup when the Packers hosted the New Orleans Saints in game pitting the two previous Super Bowl champs.
The last time the Packers played on a Wednesday — and the only time — was on Sept. 28, 1938, when they defeated the Chicago Cardinals 24-22 in Buffalo.
The game was played there because Buffalo was showing off its year-old Civic Stadium and hoping to land a pro football team.
