AOA officials

As much as I like the AOA folks for volleyball (which is their specialty), I've never been satisfied with their sixman football group since the time we had our first junior high playoffs several years ago when they bailed two days before and we ended up having no officials to call five or six games that day.

I didn't think they had many officials in their football group.

Brother Robert the first, I'd start using TASO San Antonio for your games. If they're half as good as the guys we get from TASO Austin, you'll have no problems.

I have always been told that the officials up north and west know sixman and do a good job at refing a game. I may be wrong but there is more teams in those parts of the state so it could mean better refs.

Is it locational that causes us to use certain organizations?

You usually use officials from your geographic area for several reasons.

First is money. You don't want to pay big travel bucks for refs to drive several hours to your game.

Second is that chapters usually don't like to cross paths. There is some overlap (for example, we in Seguin use the Austin chapter but we could use the San Antonio chapter)

You might bring in officals from outside your area in a playoff game situation. Last year, when we played Brenham here in the quarter finals, part of the deal was that one team got home field and the officials came from the visiting team's chapter. Or you might bring in refs from another chapter.

I know several years ago, in UIL 5A basketball, the Austin district decided to use officials outside the chapter for their district varsity games -- from Waco or Houston. Refs ended up costing a couple hundred bucks each, but then, economics (gate) would be a factor that could cover that cost.

I have seen some games where the refs look like they just got chosen of the street. I think TAPPS or whoever is in charge of those kind of things should re-teach some of them. But like i said up north and west is where the true 6man teams are and that must be where all the 6man refs are. :|

TAPPS or UIL do not "teach" officials. That is left to the chapters, be they TASO affiliated or another independent group.

There are also not enough officials to go around; some areas limit schools (especially private schools) to certain dates. I know for years, the Austin TASO Volleyball officials would not call private school games on Tuesday and Fridays, so those schools would play on Monday and Thursday.

We switched from the San Antonio football chapter to the Austin chapter several years ago because the San Antonio chapter at the time said they could not guarantee officials for Friday night six man football varsity games until a few days before the game.
