Abilene Reporter News Weakens Six-Man Coverage

The years I worked at the Brownwood Bulletin we would send someone to the Brownwood, Early, Bangs and at least 3 of the local Six-Man teams every Friday night. (May, Zephyr, Santa Anna, Brookesmith, Panther Creek, Rising Star, Blanket)jn

except ACHS.

And they don't put any extra effort into covering us. They have listed 9 players on the team roster that either graduated in the last 2 years or are no longer at the school. All information that a freshman journalism major could find out if they really wanted it.
I happened to be on the sideline last year for one of our home games and one of their reporters came up to me while the national anthem was playing and actually asked me which team ACHS was and if they were about to warm up. I figured either he "drew the short straw" for the night or was the janitor looking for some overtime. The only media that really shows up for us and does a half way decent job is KTXS. And I emphasis "half way".
I do realize though this is a lot more than some of your teams get.

Don't know why all the fuss about Reporter News - they never were very good at reporting anyone outside the immediate Abilene area and no six man for sure. Don't see as anything will change. Might be a good reason to not read their paper.

Just curious. How many people actually buy a "newspaper" anymore? I don't mean your hometown rag but a regional or big time paper. Seems like they have kinda gone the way of the Dinosaur ..............

After every game the Temple newspaper would have our score and a little article they wrote about the game. After every game I would buy the newspaper and read it... I loved it!

If the Boston Globe has lost 90% of its value over the last 10-15 years, and the WaPo has lost over 85% of its value over the same time period, AND given that the Koch Brothers have been in talks to buy up the LA Times for little more than a song - I'd say that the newspaper business - as well as most all print media - is entering the death rattle stage. It's time to embrace Algore's internet, folks.

IDK - maybe someone could set up a website where all the six-man scores and stats could be collected and posted up by - say - the following Saturday afternoon.

The ARN is becoming more and more irrelevant anyway. They've gone to paid subscription only to be able to read anything on their website, because their subscriber base for print is probably declining. It's not a big loss, as 1987 said. Half of what little they've ever printed about ACHS has been inaccurate and/or incomplete. I've offered to provide photos and game details to them before, but they weren't interested.

Now if only somebody would come up with a website or something, like rainjack said.....

That would be SWEET!

You can go to your team's page on Lone Star and enter the stats in the discussion box for that game.

Max preps would work, but there are major flaws. Not on the part of MaxPreps.
1. The system only works if people use the system. There are a lot of coaches that don't care about stats and therefore don't send them in. Only a coach can enter stats (or someone with the coaches access). A d its about 50/50 on schools that have someone who cares enough to send in that info.
2. See #1.

This website could do it too, already does for scores, but how many times has Lifegate (freeagent) had to make phone calls on Monday morning just to get scores? Throw stats into the mix and you got a mess on your hands.

There would just need to be a system in place like the NCAA uses. Live stats being collected throughout the game that are databased in a central location. Building a system to do that is not much of an issue it is, like hornkeeper says, a problem of getting people to do the work. For that to work in six-man you would have to have an extra person to do it and have an internet connection. In most cases, both are not very feasable. Technically you could have someone using a localized application that collected the stats, then when the game was over they could find an internet connection and upload it. If I thought schools would use something like that I would have it built in a couple of days.

Personally, I can't stand MaxPreps. They don't care about 6man. Journalistically speaking - no one cares about six man except for the occasional human interest story.

In my mind - this is what needs to happen:
1. Contact all the schools that tend to regularly call in stats/scores to the newspapers.
2. Ask them if they would mind sending the same game report to this website that they would send to the newspapers.

That's the first step. If you can get the teams that are willing to send in game reports to start sending them to a website - and said website is properly managed and diligent in producing a quality Saturday afternoon product - you've won half the battle.

Then you can start going after the privates to call in. There's pretty much no incentive right now for them to call in anything.

Could offer up a prize to the school that does the best job turning in stats throughout the year. Maybe a life size statue of Granger to grace the front of their school??
