We've had two quality games so far in our kickoff classic.

We got started with the Calvert vs. Emery game Thursday night. What a battle! Both teams traded scores back and forth. Emery held the lead after the first quarter 15-12 and at the half 36-34. After three the game was tied 59-59 all. Calvert went on a 26-0 run in the fourth to pull away to win 85-65. JaQuan Thompson took over. He is as a special player as advertised. Congrats to Coach John Cherry winning his first game at Calvert. He is doing a great job with the Trojans. Look for them to be in the mix in UIL DII. It was a great physical early season game for both teams. Much respect on the field for the playmakers on each side of the ball for Calvert & Emery! Good luck to the Trojans the rest of the year.

Friday night Mount Carmel and Carmel Victory & Praise played a competitive game as well. Each team has some good athletes. After a close game Crosby took the lead in the second half to also win by 20 points 58-38. Please keep Crosby Victory & Praise in your prayers as they had a players carted off with 50 seconds remaining in the game with a neck injury. He did have movement in his legs and hands, but was having neck and back pain.

We wrap up the 2016 Emery Jaguar Kickoff Classic with what looks to be two more good matchups today. At 5 pm Spring Providence Classical takes on Orange Community Christian. And, at 7:30 pm the TAPPS Div. III defending state champs San Marcos Hill Country will play High Island. Come on out to see some exciting sixman football at Emery''s Helfman Field at Caress Stadium this evening!

We closed the 2016 Emery Kickoff Classic with two exciting games Saturday night.

In game one Spring Providence jumped out to an early halftime lead by close to 20 points. But, Orange Community Christian battled back in the second half. Led by some powerful runs by senior RB Patrick Riley. The teams ended regulation tied at 47 all sending the game to overtime. After Spring Providence stopped the Orange CCS on their first possession they scored to take the 53-47 win. Both teams showed great fight in the game!

We had another great public vs. private school game in the nightcap between High Island and San Marcos Hill Country Christian. Both offenses impressed. High Island stayed pretty balanced throughout the night. For High Island Sr. QB Zach Bronkhorst can really spin it and is elusive on the ground as well. Kole Rodriguez is also a talented athlete for the Cardinals. For SMHC Major George, Josh Lyerla, and Christian Jaso were keys to their attack. Both teams showed a lot of pride in the this one. High Island sealed the victory late in the 4th with a interception returned for a TD for a 62-46 victory. I would look for both of teams to make some noise in their respective districts and the playoffs.

Each of our four games in this year's kickoff classic were very competitive. I'd like to thank Calvert, Crosby Victory & Praise, Mount Carmel, Spring Providence, Orange Community Christian, High island, and San Marcos Hill Country Christian for participating. Each coach does an outstanding job with their teams. We hope to have you back in the future!
