11 Man to 6 Man

Any coaches out there that have made the choice to leave the 11 man game and coach 6 man? Besides the obvious, what are some of the major differences that most people don't think about? How many like(love) coaching in small town enviroment? Thinking about leaving the hustle and bustle of the big city and raising the family in a smaller town down the road.

Visualize this and you'll feel the difference:

Sixman players and coaches are last second hero and state champion,
Flacca and Crabtree rolled into one,
Mach 10 fighter pilots,
Formula one racers in fire-resistant suits...rather than pit crews.
Its 12 matadors facing Toro bulls with table cloths.
Skydivers screaming to earth a hundred miles per hour and floating soft touchdowns.
They are Pachabell orchestrating "Canon in D" symphonys.
Authors of love sonnets,
Shapers of new worlds,
Captains of unsinkable battleships,
Conquorers of mysticism and superstition,
Leonidas' 300 at Thermopylae,
Heroes
Volunteers stepping over a line in the mission sand,
Patriots forging a nation from a frozen valley,
Blood-brothers crossing French beaches 10,000 miles from home.
Boys in a sandpile beneath a shady pecan.

Do I exaggerate or paint a clear picture? :} :}

Born and raised on 11 man, Coached 6 man and recently moved back to 11 man. And, can't wait to get back to 6 man.

I guess it all depends
on what your definition of smalltown
is.
6man football was never the problem.
Finding a town that will let you
is.

Only 1 of the 4 six man schools I have coached at was the AD in the Admin office(where it never should be no matter what size school)! At one of those I was the AD!

I've noticed a lot of small schools where the Head FB coach was also the AD and either the grade school/HS-JH principal or Superintendent.

Actually,
the HC/AD position has always made sense to me.
(Prolly cuz I haven't done it yet!... DOH!)
But,
In this day of endless documentation
I don't see how a Princ. or Super
could also AD/HC
and be very effective in both.
One of the guys was sayin
how he teaches some HS classes in the morn.
and does ISS afternoons.
That makes sense to me too.
The HC should have his fist on the pulse of the HS,
and his boot in the arse of school discipline.
Without discipline...
ALL else is futile.
jus sayin'.

I made the Move From 11 man to 6 man. I love it, Coaching it is pretty much the same but things in Sixman happen faster. there are things about sixman that are harder to coach but lots of fun.

I am alos the AD of my school and wouldnt have it any other way. AD needs to be a coach.

...is the principal usually in charge of the school's athletic department as well?

The Princ./Super/SchBd never get involved with the coaching decisions.
Especially if they have a kid playing.
That would be a conflict of interests. ;)

Are most 11 man coaches that move down coordinators or position assistants? Or does it matter? Just asking questions, not trying to offend. Thanks for all the insight for far.

Lesson #1: don't call it " moving down". That's kinda offensive.

I was the AD/HC for two years here while we were 11man. We made the move, and I wanted to stick with it, since I helped them come to the decision to opt for 6man. I had always been interested in it, though.

Sorry coaches I did not mean to offend anyone. You're right it's not a move down. It dosent matter if your at a big 5A or a high school with 50 kids, coaches work their tales off. I am really sorry if my last post was a slap in the face.

I am trying to get an idea on what the background is of coaches that went to a 6 man program. Were they OC/DC at 11 man programs? Or were they coaches at successful 6 man schools?

Once again sorry if I offended. Really have learned a lot since the thread started and I do appreciate all the help.

Lol....didn't intend to make you feel bad. I did that, too, and got ribbed on pretty good. I used to say "moving down" as in terms of enrollment.

As far as the experience thing goes, I wish I could help more. Like I said I was the head coach here while we were 11man and called the offense.
