Pretty neat. I really don't know why anyone would visit Rankin, other than on Memorial Day weekend.<P>At one time, Rankin's mascot was the Oiler, and their colors were purple and gold, I think. My buddy's great grandmother grew up in Rankin and she still has her Oiler basketball jersey.
When and why did they change mascots and colors?
I would think that Oilers would fit better as a mascot with Rankin's oil patch history. 
To tell you the truth, I don't really know. I guess it was in the 40s or 50s, and I don't know why it was changed to the Red Devils.<P>I heard once that they wore maroon instead of red, because when they ordered red basketball uniforms (I guess right after the change) they were sent maroon ones. They just kept the color.
Just to follow up, OBK, my friends great-grandmother didn't know either...
Too bad! That would have been the answer to an interesting historical tidbit.....

Clairemont was the Oilers.....maybe no one wanted to get confused with them....
I'm surprised that Clairemont bucked the avian mascot trend of the area.

Why? Jayton, Rotan, Girard, and I think Peacock all had/have bird mascots. :wink:
