What are the best and worst food concessions you experienced

I would say the worst i had was the six man allstar game last year here in Lubbock. Outrageous prices for everything. The real small schools have the least selection. Some schools need to desperately upgrade their football concession stands. Here is a really good question. Do football concession stands get inspected by health inspectors? I know some probably are not inspected.

I doubt health inspectors ever make the trek to the wonderful world of Sixman concession stands.
Perhaps a more relevant question would be do any of the magnanimous volunteers who staff the concessions have any training in food protection management.
I would not expect the volunteers to foot the bill for training
but that would be a great project for the booster club to fund.............
Having put my time in flipping burgers or dishing chili for various organizations, I appreciate the devotion these volunteers give to support their teams. For the large part the only feedback they get is those of the complaint variety...............

Lord, if the health inspectors hung around our concessions stands, we couldn't afford the fines ...

I look for stuff with the "Use by date" in decades, not days and months ...

Seriously, the problem you really have to think about is buying enough "stuff" to feed everyone at the game that wants to eat, but not so much stuff that you toss a lot of it out. Having just one person buy and stock the stands really does help. It's amazing how much stuff you get when multiple people take on that job.

Speaking of concessions, there's a rule of thumb I've used about pricing stuff. Whatever something costs, I triple it for the sales price ... for example, a can of soda costs somewhere around 30c, I sell it for $1. Problem is that (even at Sams/Costco), candy bars are running 50-55c each and we have to sell them for $1.50.

As for food safety, the key rule I try to pass along is -- when in doubt, throw it out. Also have enough stuff around for handwashing, cleaning, gloves, etc. ... and keeping the concessions stand clean is half the battle.

I have to agree OFB.... Homemade everything, including homemade ice cream, with multiple flavors. I love when we play at their place.

The best concession stand, year in and year out, has to be Klondike's.
What would you do for a Klondike bar?

Actually,
the Texas Rangers concessions are pretty good
if'n ya got LOT'S of dough!
jus sayin'.

I talked to a friend there at klondike. they did the concession this year. Said glad to be over. They actually had one of the kids take a serve safe course and get certified. They said they worked extremely hard and kids too. The money raised go to kids senior trip and sponsor. They earned every bit of it too. I do remember the caramel ice cream was my absolute favorite. Do enjoy the hamburgers at water valley. I still recommend the cafe at sterling city.

It's been 5-6 years ago, before the new stadium (which I've yet to see) but I remember a pretty good fresh grilled burger in Zephyr. Don't know about best but it was good. Then again maybe I was just hungry. Worst was an 11 man field hosting a playoff game near I35 South of D/FW. It involved watery thin lukewarm "chili", and pbcp in a weak attempt at a frito pie. It resulted in soggy fritos and you had to use a spoon to eat the mess. After forcing down about three bites, since I did pay for it, I tossed it.

Actually,
for someone who's gift is cooking/prep/hospitality,
a first rate concession stand
could secure serious bragging rights for a school.
Moreso prolly than a district championship.
Perhaps a contest/award is in order.
We already have a frito-pie judge.
Why not take it to the next level?

Rule # 1 for all Texas High School Six Man Football Games

1) Walk up to the concession stand
2) Ask for a Frito Pie
3) If they dont have one, go back to your seat and watch the game

Last year area track in panhandle. All they had was hot dogs and grilled cheese.

There is a direct correlation between people who love frito pie and who grew up a coach's kid.
