UIL Policy Committee Accepts TANS Study Proposal
On Tuesday, June 12, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) accepted a proposal from the Texas Association of Non-Public Schools (TANS) to determine the feasibility of forming a separate private school division within the UIL.
The TANS Board of Directors authorized this proposal at its April 2012 meeting, noting the uncertainty surrounding a potential re-organization of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS), the largest private school athletic league in the state. The board concluded that it is in the interest of private schools across Texas to explore avenues that might expand the availability of quality competitive activities.
The prerequisite terms of the proposal are very clear:
• A private school division within the UIL would be financially self-sustaining.
• Private and public schools would not compete against each other for championships or awards.
• Private schools would retain their independence and sovereignty in the areas of a school's stated mission, admission policy, staffing decisions and other vital operational policies and procedures.
The full proposal can be downloaded from our Document Library.
We look forward to this study and what we might learn about future partnerships and benefits for private schools and our students. The study is scheduled to be completed by the end of December 2012, and we will keep you informed about its progress.
