The One and Only Don Hardin

Don came through the panhandle area several months back. I told him he better stop in Groom and say hi. He went out of his way to come out and as luck would have it I was gone from school on business. Well, Don being Don hung out and visited with our superintendent and business manager. When I got back they both commented on how great of a person he was. That's Don Hardin...............15 minutes with him and you knew you had a true friend for life. He will be missed tremendously but it is comforting to know that he'll have the best seat in the house to watch the game he loves in 2013!!! If any of Don's family happen to read this thread please know that you are all in the prayers of the entire six man community.

I met Don about two years ago. He came down to the Fort to see me and just talk about 6-Man Ball. It was a great to listen to him on how much he knew of everyone playing 6-Man Ball. We will definitely be empty with Don not being here, but he will always be around 6-Man Games in Spirit!

Do you have any info on a six-man semi-pro league in Abilene area in 1970-72 time frame??? Don played on one of the teams, would be cool to find info on them.

I'll look later tonight.

I can't remember when exactly I met Don but I do remember the circumstances. It was at a scrimmage and I heard somebody remark," We can start now, here comes Don."
Don "mosied" up as Hornkeeper mentioned earlier, visiting with every person he passed and finally sat down on a ledge beside me and started talking like we were long lost friends. No introduction necessary.
Don was just a good ole West Texas Boy. No pretense, just a great person.

Alan Jackson said of George Strait that he was just a good ole boy from Texas who loved country music.
Don Hardin was just a good ole boy from West Texas who loved six-man football.

The only time I met him
I told him about where I was working,
the year we had, (only losing to Calvert),
yet how the school was struggling
to develope a culture of success.
I felt like a nobody,
yet he spoke to me as if I was somebody.
He said at least I was in the game.

I'll never forget that.

It may be one of
the few thing's that's kept me going.

Too bad I never got the chance to meet him.

We have a lot of friends we've never met through sixman. Don always "threatened" to come down to Seguin for our Clinic; I was planning to find a reason to head up to Abilene for next year's UIL finals unless the yahoos in Austin move it to Jerry's World.

Only reason I run into Granger is that it seems I find an excuse to be in Austin and it's easy to meet our great benefactor for lunch. He even told me about the lax enforcement of parking meters around the UT Tennis Center (they're not managed by the City of Austin).

Another Don Story -

In 2009 Don and I were planning on going to a game together in week 10...we both had a few games picked out...I thought that the Mullin v Sideny game would be a good one...both were undefeated and it was for the district title...Don wasn't so sure because I believe Granger's toy had pick Sidney to 45 Mullin...but we went...arrived early at Mullin, Don and I kind of milled around Mullin for a while talking to people and players getting ready for the big game, and if memory serves me right I believe Don's son Bradley drove up and went to the game as well.

It was on Don's check list to talk with the coaches if he could and so we found the Mullin coach and after talking a little, the coach asked Don if he wouldn't mind giving the pre-game locker room pep talk to the Mullin players...well Don modistly said something like "Thanks but I wouldn't know what to say, I've never done that before" and those type of things...well we ribbed him to do it and the coach kept asking...so prior to the game Don went into the Mullin locker room and gave a pep talk. When he came out he was happy as a lark...he wasn't sure if what he said was good or not...but he was happy as could be... we told him that he probably did a great job and heck the kids just thought it was cool he was there to say something. I think Don was worried that Coach Williams of Sidney would find out and be mad at him for doing it, or that if he talked to Coach Williams the Mullin kids would see and the talk would loose the effect...in any case we dodged Coach Williams! (Sorry Coach)

Well the game went on and Mullin played HARD! Well faught and played game and while Sidney did beat Mullin they made a game of it and hard Sidney sweating it! Final score was 52-38.
