Is it just me,
or has anyone else noticed
how few schools offer a choice of electives?
Art, Music, Band, Woodshop, Drafting, Home economics etc.
I was also sorry to hear
the my hometown doesn't even offer honors/AP classes
or duel credit classes anymore.

Like everything else, it's the cost of doing business. If effect, if you offer AP classes, this represents another teacher and potentially addition costs for the school. Seems that the amount of overhead isn't as detrimental to the bottom line as the incidentals of electives.

Pete's right. it comes down to money in (or rather money NOT) in the budget. A while back I posted under another thread about the Early College High School Program for which my daughter put in her application. Lubbock used to have the same program but had to close it because of budget cuts. The program in Midland would likely have been shut down as well except a couple of oil E&P companies stepped in with some impressive grant money earmarked specifically for the program in Midland. My kids go (went) to magnet schools and with the budget cuts of the last 2 years it was touch and go keeping them open as magnet schools. As it was a lot of their classes got cut. They still have their "after school program" but now the classes offered from 3:45 to 5:00 aren't real classes (art, spanish, music etc) but pretty much just glorified babysitting. The money just wasn't there to pay real teachers to do real teaching.

Luckily they were all city boys,
and I only got nicked a few times!!

Actually I know most kids here in Illinoisy public schools are below Texas public school kids. Illinoisy average achievements are calculated using the Catholic school kids who get a much much better education.
