TCAF

TCAF had a chance to right a wrong done to a young man but decided not to. They deemed our QB ineligible without even hearing his side of the story. What happened to him was the fault of the school he was going to at the time and it can be proved but that apparently does not matter to them. Why cant Christian organizations act like Christians on important matters such as this? This young man and his family were lied to by another private school but TCAF will not even consider it. Instead, throw this young man away, its the easyist thing to do. This young man is crushed right now. He feels like the system has failed him and his college chances have been diminished. All we can do is tell him to keep praying.

Coach, I have no idea of the reasoning behind the TCAF decision. I have no idea of the actual circumstances and I'm looking at this from 30,000 feet up. And before my buddy from El Paso has a heart attack, I'm actually going to stand behind TCAF on this.

But Coach, I'm not sure it helps your squad or this kid to make this public online. I'd have kept this to myself if I were you.

Okay, leagues such as TCAF, TAPPS, and T-CAL need to have some hard-and-fast eligibility rules. Otherwise, every school is going to come up with a sad sack, hard luck story about how Joey or Sammy or Abby should be allowed to play, and it's (cue the violins) "for the kids." And Lord knows, lots of us in private schools can be pretty agile when it comes to trying to get that "exception to the rule" for our kid, but we're pretty black-and-white when it comes to that school across town.

Yep, it is for the kids. For all the kids. If School A gets a pass, "exception to the rules," or whatever, then it puts them at a competitive advantage over every other school in the league that didn't get that pass. It is the responsibility of your coaches, athletic and school administration to KNOW your league's rules AND/OR get some clarification of the rules BEFORE you may take a move that will rule a child ineligible.

Coach, if the young man is eligible to play at a UIL school and has a serious chance to play some collegiate football ("college chances"), get him enrolled at the UIL school where he is eligible (attendance zone). I think all he needs is 15 days attendance at the school for eligibility. Not the best choice, but there are good Christian role models at those schools as well.

We have explained all that to him and given him several options. My complaint is that they didnt even meet with his family and listen to their story. This is a real good Christian kid that always wants to do right. Im sure he will recover but there must be a better system. Thanks for the words of advice I really do appreciate it!

Coach,

We will certainly be praying for this young man. I know it has to be a very difficult situation. I, for one, believe that the eligibilty rules a sound. However, it is tough sometimes for a young man or even families to understand why. I pray that God will give you the wisdom to speak encouraging words to this family and to this young man. Thank you for a being a Christian coach.

God Bless,

While I agree the rule may be sound in typical situations, this is far from typical. As Christians, we must take into the considerations of all sides and circumstances. This did not just happen to him but to a few other kids at the same school. So what do we tell them? Thru no fault of your own, your screwed? Is that what we tell these kids? Cause I cant! I cant tell them that adults failed them and others will not help rectify the situation that could. Why are we coaching anyway? Wins and loses do not get you thru the pearly gates. One day, I have to answer to someone greater than anyone and I want him to know that I never gave up on this kid.

Ok I will bite...UIL will not let him play TAPPS will not let him play TCAF will not let him play...It really does not matter his reason why the rules are the rules. He is not the first and will not be the last...

UIL will let him play! They told his parents he had a great case for an extra year of eligibility but he wanted to attend a private school. Thats what I like about UIL, they take all of them on a case by case basis.

This does not sound like the TCAF that I know. However, the idea that UIL would seek out the parents of a player whose eligibility is at stake is wrong. I know first hand that UIL does have eligibility resolution committees for each district, but access to that committee is granted through petition only by the school, not the parent. I have never known the administration of TCAF to turn down a request, made properly, to meet and consider a given situation.

It seems that some invovled here want as many others as possible to assume a responsibility that originally resided with the young man's family. I am a proponent of private school education. Always have been. Always will be. BUT not every private school -- unfortunately, especially the "Christian" private schools -- are run for the glory of God first and the promotion of your children second. Before moving your child to any private school, it is the responsibility of the parent to seek out the good and bad regarding that school.

Before this issue ever got to TCAF administration, it had to be missed by parents and violated by a school's administration. An organization that upholds its rules should not be publically denounced by those who feel wronged when the "wrong" could have been prevented. In addition, I find it quite suspect when God's ability to promote this young man -- regardless of the circumstances -- is brought into question. If the young man has college opportunities, this will NOT hinder God from making them happen. I guess it is just a matter of what you really believe in.

Wha .... ?? Ummm .... Do you remember Fred Sanford?? "I'm comin' Lizabeth!!!"

Ah, not true!! I know that you (Lifegate) look first for truth. I also know that it was not easy for you to put "TCAF" and "stand behind" in the same sentence. However, it becomes more clear each year why the great and wonderful Granger promoted you to board watchdog. I am beginning to understand my probation ... (and that should be scary ...).

What exactly are the circumstances behind him not being able to play?

Dog, we gotta have a talk.

It is bad form to have all the "circumstances" in front of us before we make pronouncements here on this message board.

You start expecting us to have all the "facts" and some of us are going to have to show real brilliance instead of the repackaged horse hockey we often show (I offer as proof about 70% of my posts; the problem is, I don't know which ones fit in that 70% and which are in the 30% of actual useful information.

David ... even a busted clock is right twice a day. I'll leave it to you to determine whether I'm the busted clock or TCAF is ... guess wisely, because triple secret probation might be the consequences.

I am still thinking ...

ummmm -- de-dum-de-dum .....

(fingers tap-tap-tapping)

Please see "Private Schools" thread regardng TAPPS realignment ...

(Might get my probation down to "double, with possibility of parole in a few years" ...)
