Split em up!

In six man football there are 2 divisions, based on school size. This is done in the interest of fairness, and most ppl on here agree that it is a good thing.

Why is this not done in basketball, baseball, track, etc.?

Coming from a six man school, I notice the boys have a hard time competing, year in, year out. Unless they are playing other six man schools.
Or is this something that is already being done and I just haven't noticed it.

In my oh so humble opinion, I think 1A roundball (as well as the spring sports) should be split into 3 divisions
1) 11-man football schools (they tend to have the numbers)
2) 6-man football schools
3) Non football playing schools (even the smaller schools are generally better because they have more time to spend on roundball)

Does anyone else have an opinion on this? If you disagree with me then why?
I know the # of six man schools hovers around 130, does anyone know the # of 11 man, 1A schools? Or the # of non football schools?

Class A basketball is already split into 2 divisions. D-I is schools with enrollment of 100 or more and D-II is schools with enrollment under 100. The only change I would make in basketball is to split the divisions equally without regard to the 100 enrollment. Currently there are 20 more schools in D-II.

My Opinion is that if your school has at least 100 then you should be required to play three sports, like Football, Basketball and track. If a school like say Brock, Huckabay, Lipan or Graford only have basketball then since they are within the same general area should be put into a district with ONLY basketball playing schools. As for Divisions lets talk about the football divisions in sixman. The current system has total enrollment counted and then a magic number is spit out by the drunk monkey at UIL. Like this year I think it was 51 if you were over then DIV I if below then DIV II. This seems only to be done for football so why do they count girls?I say the system is flawed bc some schools have a higher percentage of girls than boys and vice versa. So a school that has a total enrollment of 57 may only have 13 boys but is in DIV I where as a school with an enrollment of 49 may have 40 boys and is in DIV II this does not make sence to me but then again I am not a drunk monkey.

I don't know about UIL, but TAPPS uses average boy enrollment over three quarters (the last quarter's number doubled) to classify its football teams. So it can be done.

I would definitely agree that only boys should be counted for football alignment.
Wouldn't it be easier to just keep a district the same for all sports? So a team that played div II football for example would play the same town in basketball, track, baseball, etc.

The problem with basketball is when you have a school who does not play football. They are in the gym year around. Baseball is the biggest sports problem for six-man schools. It is hard for a sim-man school to field a team in the first place, but when you get stuck in a school with 11-man schools it is hard to match up. The biggest problem with trying to put sim-man in a baseball district by themselves is locations, a lot of schools are spread out.

KDUB you hit the nail on the head, I think the way they count enrollment needs to be changed, divison 2 is way overcrowded and a lot of the small schools (50 and lower) are getting squeezed out of playoff oppertunities. The same problem that plagued sixman is now plaguing the basketball, too many schools with 90 somethin' enrollment in the system, the days of 'anyone can beat anyone in basketball' are over.

Here is what I think needs to be done.

1. Sixman made into a separate classification with divison 2 becoming class 1A and divison 1 becoming class 2A.

2. Make 1A basketball, track, cross country ect. all schools under 100. If not, give them a separate classification with 2 divisons.

3. Enrollment should be counted by 8th grade-11th grade boys for boys sports, girls for girls sports, too many ways of counting enrollment, need to pick one and keep to it.

Just my opinion.

I know in our football district there are 4 teams. However, in basketball district, we have 7. The other 3 are DI schools and we are a small DII. I dont really think that's fair, either.

I'm just sayin'...

Back in the early 80s at Gordon we stunk at boys basketball. The teams in our district back then that were the best were Huckabay, no football, and Santo, 11 man. The two worst teams in the district were Gordon and Strawn, we used to compete for last place in district and I think the ones that actually got that last spot were really the victors. Back then we went to the playoffs all the time and the football boys were mostly all the starters in round ball so we were always a few weeks behind the non football/non playoff schools.

As to counting only girls in HS for girls sports and the same for boys would that really work? The boys and girls always played the same schedule back then and the bball games were always a double header with girls playing first. Occasionally, rarely, there would be a JV boys game first and we would then have three games.

What did not make any sense when I was in school was the practice situation. The girls were PE next to last period with the boys being last. We would take the gym and practice until coach was done, the girls got that next to last period and after us if they wanted, they rarely did. The girls team back then actually competed, they should of had the gym more than us. 2 gyms in Gordon now so no problems I guess.
