For those interested in football history....

I believe that this is the 1920 Strawn High School Football Team, making it the first football team to be fielded at Strawn. The lady that sent this to me says that her father was the captain of this team and she was certain that it was either 1919 or 1920. Her dad moved to NJ, where she lives now, in 1921. I do not have any football records for Strawn prior to 1920 so I will go with that for now. If anyone out there can identify any of the team members let me know.

I have Strawn playing four games that year....

Strawn 79 Ranger 0
Strawn 37 Thurber 14
DeLeon 62 Strawn 0
Strawn 53 Ranger 0

Eligibility rules back then used to be somewhat less precise as they are now. I think the form said something like: "Did you ever ride past a high school?" If Yes, you're eligible.

Found this on bing images. No idea what paper. Says "the 1923 strawn greyhounds the 1927 was probably strawn s" below the picture. Caption says they were to play Cleburne in Strawn Nov 12 and were contending for the championship of the southerh half of district ___. They beat Cleburne 24-21. And Ranger the 2nd time 30-0 along with Cisco Jr College, Weatherford, Mineral Wells, Fort Worth Central (3-0), Bridgeport (40-0), and of course Gordon - 52 - 13.

In response to twodollarbill's post... that Strawn website is my site and the 1920 designation to that photo may be off a year....my source made an estimated guess on that one... the one i added in this thread is from 1919 or 1920.. I am supposed to be getting newspaper clippings that belong with that photo soon... that should please oldbearkat to no end.. haha

Great picture and great find!

Things to remember about old photos...often mistakes are madein guessing the year due to football being played in the fall of the school year...in a lot of County History books that include photos of school sports teams...example I found for Sylverster HS football team photo that was in aFisher County history book...they will say the photo was from 1938 when in fact once you id'ed a few members in the phot it had Sr.'s from the class of 1938 so in fact the photo was the 1937 football team photo.

It could also be a "town" or club teams...they had those back then and even played high school teams

But based on the info from the lady who had it she is probably correct and the other 1920 Strawn photo is probably from a later time

Model T maybe.... they had bus like motorized buggies at the time too... they probably took the train to towns along the tracks... especially when they played Ranger, Eastland, Cisco, Baird...

I've heard some of the local old farts talk about wild train rides from O'Donnell and Slaton to Lamesa after ball games.

My dad told a story about his playing days in the late 30's. seems like the team was invited to play a San Angelo team. Their coach didn't want to play the bigger school but the team did so they scheduled it on their own , arranged for transportation, ( cattle truck ) made the trip, won.
Imagine that happening today. ...........

When did the oil boom flow past Strawn?

Discovered 1895. 1'st production 1915, 20 wells. 1917 on part of the Ranger/Hogtown "biggest boom ever".
Then there was the coal mining boom. All this courtesy of Mr. Gordon.
