Greetings Coaches and Athletic Directors:

This is from Coach Willis of www.provision-inc.org. We are an all-male private charter school in Houston. We would like to establish a program at our high school, but need to know all related costs (equipment, insurance, liabilities, league fees, etc.). What do we need to know to start?

PLEASE HELP ASAP. Thank you.

If you are a charter school that plans to play UIL, you wont be playing six man football long. One more year to be exact, since all charter schools have to align with the smallest public district in their attendance zone. If you are going to play with the privates, I'm sure any of these private school guys could help you out with info. Welcome!

As I understand it, TAPPS will not accept charter schools. As it was stated days of charter school athletics might be limited. May not be fair, but those before you have ruined it for others.

HPD, You are correct. TAPPS does not admit tax-supported schools (ie charter schools) into membership. However, TCAL does admit charter schools into membership. There are several charter schools in the Houston area (Sanchez, Mt. Carmel, West Columbia and others) that belong to TCAL.

As has been noted, UIL is going to align charter schools based on the smallest ISD school in the district where the charter school is located. You can pretty well thank Deion Sanders and Prime Prep for this rule, but what it will do is force charter schools who wish to remain in UIL to basically move up to 4A and 5A levels. Realistically, what this will do is force charter schools to leave UIL for either independent play, join UIL, or perhaps a new charter school league would form (and there is actually a Texas Charter School Academics and Athletic League, based in Austin).

Costs of setting up a six-man program basically will depend on what you have, what you need, and what you want. Uniforms and protective equipment are going to run you somewhere around $500 per player (figure outfit a 20 man team for about $10,000).

I've been meaning to give Coach Willis a call; Granger passed along his number last week. Will try to call him later this week.
