Headsets

Always cracks me up when sixman schools use headsets. If you can't stand on the sideline and watch 6 guys run around a football field you might need your eyes checked. My opinion is probably in the minority, oh well.

Saw two guys years ago, they had bleachers that were about 3 levels high, about 6 feet. They had their headsets on and one was on the top row and the other on the field. They had trouble with head sets and ended up talking to one another. Pretty funny. Sure that some schools use them to great advantage. Worked at school that had a telephone from press box and Superintendent would call down to tell me what was doing wrong. Got to where did not answer it, disabled the ringer. Ha

Just saying

Too funny.

While officiating a few years ago, saw a coach slam some on the ground, pieces went every where. Guess was not good enough cause he grabbed one of the assistant's head set and slam dunked it also. Not sure how much they cost, but figure was a pretty penny.

Actually, you get a better perspective on the game a few feet up in the air (ie, press box, stands, or riser ... and I saw one team which traveled with scaffolding for that purpose and they were pretty darn good year in and year out; still are now that I think about it).

We have headsets but don't use them as often as we used to. You do have to have someone upstairs who has an idea of what he sees and knows how to use them judiciously. I know it would drive me bananas to have some guy blabbering on throughout the game because as a coach I actually might be busy calling plays, formations and the like.

Oh, and if your opponent has a fit that you have headsets and they don't, there is NO RULE that says you cannot use your headsets if the opponent does not. NCAA rules specifically say that the officials have no control over the use of audio communications during the game. You can't use video or fax transmissions, but headphones or cell phones are okay.

I've used headsets for much of my coaching career- six and eleven man, and I do believe they can be a great benefit with a "box" coach that knows what he's looking for, and a coach in the game willing to listen. It's not a matter of just having "six" men, it's the height you get to see the entire field. Now, if there's no press box elevated, I can't see much use in them. Today, most sixman schools have press boxes..

I know as a O/Dline coach in tight formation, it would be much better seeing everything from a box in the air. On the sideline I see the guy on my side, half of center and very little of the other end. Plus I always stand behind the LOS, our head coach stands at the LOS and our D Coordinator stands ahead of the LOS. Communication would be much easier with headsets. I know our school is looking into them this yr, I think it will help use out tremendously...
