Espn

11-man fan
The past couple of days I've been watching high school football on espn. I got to wondering how could we get a sixman game be played on there? I mean it would draw more interest to the game and plus probably entertaining for a lot of people who haven't seen it. I mean we have to have some kind of sixman alumni who has the pull to get this done!

Live streaming the games would be the most cost effective way to do it and I thin that would be awesome. We currently do it for the state Championship games through Fox Southwest. As far as going live on TV, never going to happen. The problem we run into is assuring the time block they have slotted. A typical 11 man game is blocked off for 3 hours, most 6man games "if" they go all 4 quarters run between 2 to 3 hours, which is bad. The main problem are the games that end early. How does ESPN or Fox Sports justify to a major company to buy commercials for a game that could end at halftime due to our mercy rule.

I would truly love to see a game televised on a major network, but in today's society money talks. Until the games are closer or we get rid of the mercy rule, which will never happen, internet live stream is going to be as good as it gets. Fox Sports doesn't even replay the state games from this past year and they are already recorded.

Most 6-man fields are not equipped with enough lighting required to televise a game even if a network wanted to televise the games. At best you'd have to play on a Saturday afternoon, which a community might be willing to do in exchange for air-time.

But bottom line is that there is just not a mass market for our sport. One possible avenue would be to approach RFD TV, since they are a network that caters to rural interests.

Millions really? Have you seen some of the schools that have played on espn? Some are still rocking the old fish net jerseys from the 80s! No way they can be paying espn that much money if they can't even afford good equipment.

Not to mention that pert near everyone that wants to watch the games are AT THE GAMES. When are ya gonna realize it ain't that popular. Love it for what it is. The last ditch effort for our kids to play organized football. They televise the Championship game because the State bought a block of time and the kids there deserve it. It's not like people are burnin up ESPN's suggestion line to start televising OUR BELOVED sport.

ESPN doesn't need to create a market for 11-man football on any level - it already exists. Therefore, the schools shown playing on TV get paid instead of having to pay. 6-man does not have a market. It will have to create one. That isn't free, and it doesn't happen over night. Like $2 said, pretty much everyone who wants to see a given 6-man game is at the game.

Figure out how to create a market that the sports networks can't ignore, then 6-man will be on TV.

I don't see that ever happening. Hell, most of the football world looks on 6-man football as a side-show or something.

Don't mistake what I said as trivialization or minimization. I LOVE the game and the opportunities it affords our kids. That being said, it is what it is. The best our schools can do with a minimal amount of folks.
I'm not sure that they think of our game as a side show as much as they just don't think of our game.
Just like they think of our communities as ghost towns or wide spots in the road.
I've a better idea than going "Commercial" with it, let's enjoy it for what it is & keep it all our own and keep raising awareness.

Dear Arnold, I assumed that your involvement in the entertainment industry would have led to a rudimentary understanding of that business. Advertising for broadcasts are sold in blocks of time that the cost of is determined by the number of people watching a particular broadcast. In 2013 the cost for a 30 second spot on ESPN was $54,415.00. Do the math and figure out who would want to spend that much to reach that particular niche market. I doubt the local funeral homes of our communities would opt in. Now Bubba's Beer, Bait & Ammo might be able to swing it.

Maybe you're right $2 about most of the football world just not thinking of 6-man but, those that do often call it sandlot or a track meet. Can't really hold it against them, they just don't know. One thing I'll say though is, if you talk them into attending a game with you, make sure it's a good one and not a blow-out. If you take them to the local Friday night slaughtering it just reinforces their already marginal opinion of the game. Take them to a game like WV vs. Follett or WV vs. Crowell last year and you'll have a better chance at getting them hooked on the game. Of course, just about any WV game should do the trick because, well you know, it's Water Valley. I mean, am I right? :-)

Longhorn85 was the whole game broadcast on espn or just short bits of it? Do you know how this deal came about? But I would just like for sixman athletes to get the exposure that they deserve! We may not be putting out hundreds of d1 signees like 5a or 4as but we have athletes that could compete on any level! Most of our athletes are overlooked cause lack of exposure and ignorance from people who think sixman isn't real football. I feel like the more people see this game and see what kind of athletes we have the more respect the game will get!

Only the clips you see were broadcast on ESPN. The game in 94 came about through dealing with Tommy Wells setting up the first publicized game between high ranking teams from Texas against other high ranking teams from other states. The deal in 96 may have been just coverage following the 11 page layout about sixman that was in Sports Illustrated a few weeks prior to that, which included Gordon and Zephyr.

Just an observation .. First off I am new to this board but one thing that might be a deterrent to anyone taking the game of sixman seriously other than those who live in those communities , is if you were to read some if these post by some in this board they give the impression that sixman fans are ignorant and backwoods . I know that is not true , but to an outsider the misspelled words. (On purpose ) the "hijacking " of serious questions to talk about unrelated issues to the topic . U want to get national exposure first thing to do is clean up this board and get rid of some of the problems
