What JC said is correct, a lot of gyms will give their old equipment away. Also check on Craigslist. Search for weights and exercise equipment. Email the ad and then tell them you're from a school and ask if they'd be willing to donate it. Tell them you can get them a tax deduction if they donate it. I did that at KPA and ended up getting around 10k worth of equipment donated. Hope that helps.
