what is a good defense against a good spread back
Better Runner ? Better Passer ? Good Combo ? Quickness ? Elusiveness ? Speed ? Size ( height and weight ) ? How good are his receivers ( speed and number of receivers who are a threat each down ) ? What is the spreadbacks tendency - throw deep or short most of the time ?

Makes a difference in whether or not you rush 3 or 2 ... Spy with one ... and so on and on and on ...

Not a simple question because the most effective defense is dependent on the individual spreadbacks abilities AND his support cast ....

i was just poking fun but looking at the defense with the lowest scores d1 ira ---- they have a fast defense that reacts quickly to any offensive threat and is able to limit yardage in the open field--- d2 grandfalls best thing they have again is team speed to make up for any mistakes

I would agree 100%. Ira held us (Gordon) to 24 because they are fast. Stephenville faith held us to 35 because they are fast. Strawn held us to 36 because they are fast. And we have a good spreadback. Same the other way around, we held those teams to 28, 32, and 44 because we are fast too, and they all have good spreadbacks and running backs. Speed is the #1 defense against a high powered offense. When we didn't have our speed because of injuries, the high powered offense we played (Richland) had their way with us.

justobserving are you saying coaching is important also?
Naw !! Just put 'em out there and let 'em learn as they go - they most likely will figure it out in a few years …. Look at all the money you could save paying coaches. As was my experience when I was coaching and now sitting in the stands and watching and listening there are a bunch of people around who can do a much better job anyway !! LOL

But on the real side of it …. I have seen talent overcome by coaching on several occasions as I am sure many others have.

It is fact as pointed out above - speed kills - on either side of the ball.

i f you ever get the chance go see a team coached by vance jones he could makea purse out of a sows ear. before anyone gets to excited about the players i saw them before he was the coach and after it is as differant as night and day..... he is a great teacher

I have seen Balmorhea a couple of times this year and Garden City when Jones was there. His teams come in prepared and play defense. The game with Grandfalls this year felt like it a close game until the end.
