Current Jr High Talent

It appears there are more teams than not with Jr Highs that are down on talent. There are some talented freshman in the Wichita Falls area and a few talented groups of 7th graders, but no one seems to have talented groups of 8th graders. We've played Abilene Christian and Dallas area schools and everyone so far has been down this year. Just wondering if it's a fluke or a trend? Thoughts? And I'm not talking about a feisty sixth grade group with potential. I'm talking about a solid group of 8th graders that is doing big things now. And it's not just about record. The combined records of all teams will always be .500. It's about your experienced evaluation of your 8th graders.

Have to say that we have been pleasantly surprised by our JH squad- Have a fair balance between 7th and 8th grade, and have about 1/2 the team that this is their first time playing football...We went into the season with no real idea of what to expect, and now they are 5-0 and only given up 4 touchdowns all season...We didn't know what to expect coming in, but trying to find them a handful of strong opponents for weeks 6, 8, 9....willing to talk about any available games.....

In fredyburg thurs visiting with family. watched Veritas 8th graders play Geneva boys. Both teams appeared to have some good athletes. Veritas had a kid, number 32 i think, who was really fast, not afraid to run into a crowd. Great athlete. Geneva won but not sure what score was. they had two or three boys weighing in around 200. Four or five really quality athletes. On top of that they had a kid that appeared fast enough to play with the varsity kids. Only touched the ball 4 or 5 times and had 2 or 3 touchdowns. Just watching these two well coached, hard playing, young gentleman play would suggest that if there is a shortage of good eight grade teams, there are a few youngsters coming up. Better close here. Long way to dime box.

We do not have any kids who weigh 200, though one is close. We have another at around 180 and both are very good linemen. The very fast RB referenced above is as good a true RB as I have seen at the JH level. He is so good that most games he carries the ball only 4-5 times. We have 5 other boys who get regular playing time at RB and 3 at QB. This team is definitely one of the most talented, unselfish JH teams I have ever coached, and I have coached some very good JH teams.

As for the comments about JH football, in the Austin/San Antonio area I would say that we have several teams that are very good this season. Sure, some teams who graduated 10 or so 8th graders are down and some smaller teams with some huge boys are doing better than normal, but all in all I have seen some really solid football considering many of these boys have never played tackle football before. Unlike year's past, I have yet to see a game where a team is struggling to get a snap off, or half the players don't know the plays. I have also seen several teams with many younger boys who strap it on and give it their best with the bigger boys. These teams will be very good over the next two years.

One thing that was unusual this season is that for the first time in a few years we had several teams not make. This is always a concern for some of the smaller schools, but this year the South Texas Football Conference had 5 teams cancel before the season started and 3 of those teams were large-school teams (originally we divided our 25 JH teams into a 12-team large-school conference and 13-team small-school conference). And all three teams had been at the top of the standings over the past 5 years. Obviously, if we had these teams at full strength and still in the fold, the league would have been stronger.

Coach GSB. My humblest apology about the 200 comment. Both those boys seemed to play big. Sounds like some fun young men to coach. The best to you and your boys.

No problem at all. Like I said, he is very close.

There are several very large boys on that team. I have never had a group of boys close to that big on any of the teams I have coached. And looking back, I have coached some very talented JH teams. My first year we had a 6th grader who is now a junior back up RB on a very good Smithson Valley team. I saw he was the leading rusher in their game the other day. Even playing against 8th graders he was as good a RB on the field in most games. Funny thing is the best player on that team, an 8th grader, never played football again. He focused on basketball at Churchill and received a scholarship to play basketball at Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo. I also coached some very good teams at Geneva and those boys are now seniors and juniors on the Geneva varsity team. I must admit I really enjoy coaching JH football and it is very satisfying to watch them grow up and play high school football.

There is a jr high team here at Forestburg that's looking like good up coming talent. They have more eighth graders playing than all of high school which is 7 with always one player out with an injury but they don't give up either.
