Best defense

I am sure that this has been addressed numerous times here, but it would take a while to find what i'm looking for, so here it is: What is the best AND MOST ADAPTABLE defense in six man? I want to implement a defense that is not only solid, but also easy for the players to learn, with simplified assignments. I understand that this is a difficult question; I'd like to know your thoughts. Comment here or PM me and lets discuss.

Thank you,

Coach Burger,

Getting the chance to see alot of games these past few years, I'd say, the 1st thing is, IF you have talented kids on defense, ANY defense will work.
Also, your defense needs to be something you believe in and you will have to stay with it for a long time before you see results.

I've seen coaches run 2-3-1, 2-4, 3-2-1, 3-3, 4-2, 5-1.......
I've seen teams run 3-3 with DE's outside shade with 2 inside LBs, 3-2-1 with front 3 head up and 2 backers outside.

Off the top of my head, Borden County runs a darn good 3-2-1

But remember, If you have some talented kids, pretty much all defenses will work
BUT REMEMBER.........NO ONE IN THE HISTORY OF 6 MAN HAS SHUT OUT EVERY OPPONENET
So don't think 11man defensive terminology... You will get scored on

Well, we have had success with the 2-3 in the past, as well as other defenses. I know it depends on what athletes you have... what i'm trying to do is simplify a defense so my (mostly underclassmen) team next year will be able to understand it easily, and adapt easily to different formations (spread, tight, twins, etc.). However I also want it to have varied calls... because I know as an offensive guy that sitting in one defense gets your defense picked apart. Every defense has a weakness, so the best option I see is to have a simplified, but variable defense that is harder to guess.

It truely depends on the athletes you have. Highland and Blackwell in the 90's and 00's ran a pretty formidable bend dont break 2-3-1 defense. You could call Coach Hyde or Coach Owens at highland. Water Valley runs a stout 4-2. But they have some rediculous athletes in their ranks. 3-3 is another one to look at if you have some speed at corner and safety. If you want to see film on defenses you can message leman saunders and he could get you film of the best sixman defenses over the last 30 years.

Coach, I truly believe that the 2-3-1 fits your personal better. It is universal and employs a bend but don't break philosophy. I'd run that a 3-3-3 and a 4-2 if I were you. I have no doubt that you will figure it out.

Ive ran several different defenses over the years and 2-3 has been my favorite and most adaptable to your talent. I also love this defense because you can run 2-3, 3-2, 4-2, 5-1, and 3-3 from 1 look. Most of the basics I learned from conversations with Trey Richie and studying film from Coach Owens over at Highland.

My favorite is the 1 and everyone else. Put your stud in the middle and let everyone else line up around him.

Basically, put your best players in the best position to make plays against your opponent and then fill in around them/him. That's coaching - - getting the best out of your players with what works best for them.

Good Point!!!

I was wondering
how anyone could answer a question like this
without knowing
what squad you're using it with.

I think one of the funnest parts
is tryin to figger out what works
for your boys.

I am definitely not a defensive genius, but personnel dictates everything. A 4-2, 3-3 and 3-2-1 are the most popular, but I couldn't tell you how to stop certain offenses. What I have noticed in my two years in Buckholts, is it comes down to open field tackling. Doesn't matter if you have the best strategy, if the tackle isn't made in open space - TOUCHDOWN!!!! One day I will figure it out, but until then, I will keep watching film and learning from my mistakes.

So,
the best offence is blocking,
and the best defense is tackling.
Hmmm,
Now you put it in a way even I can understand.
