Becoming a Teacher and Coach

Coaches,
I am a long time follower of sixmanfootball.com but a first time poster. It’s been a goal of mine since I was in HS to coach and teach. Even though I am in the process of becoming a fully certified teacher/coach, through one of the state’s ESC’s, I am looking for some help. What do you guys recommend for how much studying time to take before taking the test? I am trying to get certified in 4-8 CS and it is not easy. I really do want to be in the classroom and on the field but going through the process of alt cert is difficult. Did any of you guys go through it and is there anything you guys would do differently? I do have a genuine heart for the kids and I always want see them succeed in everything they do. Thanks so much for all the help. Any info is greatly appreciated.

What is your degree in? While I can help you with Social Studies and ELA if you need it (certified 4-12 in both,) I would advise you to study for the parts you struggle with generally. Also, you cab take the 4-8 tests split by Science/Math or SS/ELA. I choose not to take the Generalist because the Math scared me and knew I could challenge the Science later if I needed it.

TheBigSum, first and foremost, congratulations on your decision! Teaching is an extremely rewarding profession though it may be years before you start to see the fruits of your time and sweat. I have been a high school teacher and coach for the past 15 years and nothing in the world would make me want to change careers. Teaching is truly my vocation. While I do not have any suggestions regarding certification, I would recommend you start volunteering at any school that will take you and jump right in! During my college days, I was in a dual degree program which enabled me to do my undergrad degree *AND* my teaching degree at the same time. Further, every semester during my 4 years I had a different teaching placement/practicum where I would spend one day a week in the classroom teaching kids from the age of 19 until I graduated at 23. Having those years of experience certainly made my first paid teaching job upon graduation a lot easier. All the best TheBigSum!
