Kind of a little of everything.
Austin voted in May to create a hospital district to help fund the Medical School the UT System wants to build in Austin. <<I am all for the med school and voted for it as well>> The location of which, I have known for several years (on the property where the tennis center is currently located). I knew this when I was offered the job, we just assumed we had at least six years, not less than two and a half. Earlier this year, I saw the writing on the wall. At the same time, I was approached by a professor and told I should consider a new masters program in the business school in analytics. I applied and got in.
I made a proposal to the University to keep me on through January 1. I would work part-time, using my comp and vacation time to make me full-time and we could fulfill all of our contract obligations and keep everyone employed, while I attend grad school. We would then close to the public Jan 1. This was approved tentatively in several meetings and I moved forward. It was a win-win for everyone.
About two weeks ago I was called into a meeting and informed my position had been 'unfunded', effective 9/1. I knew this was a possibility, but had really no indications of such. I had to notify all of my staff and let them go. I have also had to scramble on some other fronts. This will all be a blessing in disguise, but the harsh reality is that I will effectively stop working at UT at the end of next week, save for closing down a few items and cleaning my office.
All in all, I am doing well, but trying to figure out how we will manage a few things. I begin school soon enough and will be focused on that.
