Any coaches looking for a volunteer?

thunderjake

11-man fan
I am planning on going to school part time and have a job where I can be off multiple days out of the week and I have always been a fan of the game. I would beiinterested in helping out anyway that I can.

I am willing to do anything, as long as it helps me network with coaches from the area. I am planning on going back to school and I'd like to coach.

If you can find a private school they will let you coach, UIL rules are if you are not a school employee then you cannot coach. I coached at a private school for a few years and had a blast. Moved to an area where no private schools are close so I tried to help coach at the local public school and was unable. I did get to be the trainer so I was still around the game and the kids so it was a great year.

Just kiddn' Jake, good answer. Wish you luck. What's your interest in the game based on. Did you play? (I did not myself).
Thanks! I laughed at your post and channeled my inner Bobby Boucher. I played 11 man football, but I really got into six man about 6 years ago when my brother started playing at that level.

Yeah, after looking into it after I received a pm, I won't be able to, but I'd be interested in helping out with anything else. I just want a chance to get the fundamentals and help out in return.

I too played 11 man and came to love the game from watching a nephew. Consider Refereeing, filming, or the chain gang. My greatest contribution is Yelling Really LOUD when I see something Cool happen.

I would love running the chains to see the action up close. There's nothing more awesome than dodging a tackle lol. I could also run film.

Then there's keep stats or take pics. If you're serious about learning about the game then seriously consider joining a referee chapter. Ref the JH on Thurs and do stats for Var on Fri. The insights you'll gain from that experience alone will be valuable when you get a coaching job.

that's an awesome suggestion!

If your serious about coaching six man someday get a copy of Coach Underwood's book "Six-Man Football" from amazon. Since you didn't play the game (like me), read it, re read it, study it. It might give you a better understanding of some of the basics. I read it once and still can't identify a lot of formations. But I learned somewhere along the way the difference between a tight and spread. An up back from a spread back.
Of course you'll need a teaching field in your education if your going public.
For inspiration look to coach Crawford in Abbott. I've read he played and I believe coached 11 man before first going there. He's been to the dance and a game away at lest a couple of more times. Or there's coach Lee of Strawn, he played 11 man at Crane, then in college. After HC in Grandfalls-Royalty then Silverton he's won state twice, been there once more and a game away a couple of times.

This is the green book right? I ordered it a while back and it helped me understand the rule set. It is an awesome bit of information for sure.

Yes my copy has a green cover. I think I'll re-read it before the season starts just for a refresher course.
It's never too late to learn I've read.

To be honest I thought of suggesting scouting. But, since once again you like I did not play the game, we have a learning curve. That can be overcome as mentioned above regarding the Abbott and Strawn coaches among others. Knowledge of the game is important for analysis of it. Learning to recognize formations would seem key to me. Just a thought but you might try to tag along with an experienced coach during a bye week, they might point out what to look for.
Another thought. You might observe a few pre-season practices from a distance. If you have a question or maybe even two on occasion, afterwards, some coaches might help you from time to time.
